Is Val's breakfast pie the quiche of death? Owning her own business seemed like pie in the sky to Valentine Harris when she moved to the coastal California town of San Nicholas, expecting to start a new life with her fianc. Five monthsand a broken engagementlater, at least her dream of opening a pie shop has become a reality. But when one of her regulars keels over at the counter while eating a quiche, Val feels like she's living a nightmare. After the police determine the customer was poisoned, business at Pie Town drops faster than a fallen crust. Convinced theyre both suspects, Val's flaky, seventy-something pie crust maker Charlene drags her boss into some amateur sleuthing. At first Val dismisses Charlenes half-baked hypotheses, but before long the ladies uncover some shady dealings hidden in fog-bound San Nicholas. Now Val must expose the truthbefore a crummy killer tries to shut her pie hole.

Mehso-so

I really cannot tell if I would have liked this better if I‘d read it instead of listening to it. The constant use of the word “jaguar” got on my nerves, but I might not have noticed it in print because it wouldn‘t have been pronounced “jagwire.” The characters are okay. Val is kind of boring. Charlene got on my nerves, but I got used to her. I don‘t know if I‘ll read another in this series or not.

This is my nighttime listen, and one thing is driving me batty. The word “jaguar” is used a whole lot in this book (way more than anyone would think would be needed) and every single damn time, the narrator says “jagwire.” Ugh.

Reggie Is there an actual jaguar or is it a car? 1y
KathyWheeler @Reggie Actual — or possibly a ghost one. The jaguar is the mascot of the university where I work. Publications from there don‘t use that word as much as this book does! 1y
