A Uterus Is a Feature, Not a Bug
A Uterus Is a Feature, Not a Bug: The Working Woman's Guide to Overthrowing the Patriarchy | Sarah Lacy
4 posts | 3 read | 24 to read
A rallying cry for working mothers everywhere that demolishes the "distracted, emotional, weak" stereotype and definitively shows that these professionals are more focused, decisive, and stronger than any other force. Working mothers arent a liability. They are assets youand every manager and executivewant in your company, in your investment portfolio, and in your corner. There is copious academic research showing the benefits of working mothers on families and the benefits to companies who give women longer and more flexible parental leave. There are even findings that demonstrate women with multiple children actually perform better at work than those with none or one. Yet despite this concrete proof that working mothers are a lucrative asset, they still face the "Maternal Wall"widespread unconscious bias about their abilities, contributions, and commitment. Nearly eighty percent of women are less likely to be hired if they have childrenand are half as likely to be promoted. Mothers earn an average $11,000 less in salary and are held to higher punctuality and performance standards. Forty percent of Silicon Valley women said they felt the need to speak less about their family to be taken more seriously. Many have been told that having a second child would cost them a promotion. Fortunately, this prejudice is slowly giving way to new attitudes, thanks to more women starting their own businesses, and companies like Netflix, Facebook, Apple, and Google implementing more parent-friendly policies. But the most important barrier to change isnt about men. Women must rethink the way they see themselves after giving birth. As entrepreneur Sarah Lacy makes clear in this cogent, persuasive analysis and clarion cry, the strongest, most lucrative, and most ambitious time of a womans career may easily be after she sees a plus sign on a pregnancy test.

SARAH LACY WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE 🙌🏻

Sharing her own experience working her way up in Silicon Valley & creating a company while raising 2 kids, and presenting stark facts showing how little we respect professional woman for being anything other than ticking time bombs waiting to request time off for doing crazy things like getting married & have babies— Lacy lays out how far we are from a 50/50 society. Women deserve more. #Booked2018

readherwriteher @mrozzz Getting it. It sounds like a must read. 6y

mrozzz It worked well as an audiobook. Enjoy!! @BarbaraTheBibliophage 6y
Cinfhen Love this post 🙌🏻💕and why I LOVE Litsy....I‘m introduced to soooo many new and exciting books😀 6y
LazyDays Wow. I never thought of life that way....ticking baby bombs. In going to have to read this one. 6y
mrozzz @Cinfhen me too! 😊 Litsy has wildly expanded what I like to read. 6y
mrozzz @LazyDays it‘s really sad... she describes how the inherent bias is so bad that women are discriminated against in the work place just for being women because there is the POTENTIAL to be married and have a family. 6y
KathyWheeler Even in a female dominated profession like mine (librarian), there is bias. My former Dean told me his librarian mother told him to become a librarian because he could rise to the top easily because he was a man. It was true — despite his supreme incompetence. A male librarian I know has been promoted — against the vote of the committee. The reason the female director took the step to override the committee decision? “He has a family to support.” 6y
rjsthumbelina Stacked! Sounds right up my alley 6y

LazyDays @mrozzz that is sad. Women struggle to be taken seriously in the country.😞 6y
mrozzz Wow that is INFURIATING @KathyWheeler Women dominate in higher education and yet there is still a huge gap in representation at the top of companies. Even women have this bias against other women. 😟 6y
mrozzz @rjsthumbelina hope you like it! ☺️ 6y
KathyWheeler @mrozzz It really is infuriating. If I‘d been as incompetent as both that Dean and the male librarian who was promoted over the vote of the committee, nobody would have promoted me or overridden a committee vote for me. I want to expect better from a female dominated profession, but I‘ve learned that I can‘t. 😞 6y
mrozzz Use whatever power you can @KathyWheeler if colleagues make passive aggressive or micro-aggressive comments about other ladies call them out in a way that‘s productive. It‘ll take a long time but we‘ve got to work from the bottom up to stomp out this bias. 6y
KathyWheeler @mrozzz That‘s part of the reason I‘m the faculty advisor for the student chapter of the American Association of University Women. This stuff has to stop; maybe they can be the ones who stop it. 6y
mrozzz @KathyWheeler 🙌🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👏🏻 6y

Yes. Yes. And YES! I mostly picked this up to fulfil the “book about feminism” for the Pop Sugar 2018 Challenge. I definitely identify as a casual feminist but this book was just SO good. I did not expect to Love it this much!
