I just read the first essay in Pullmans collection “The Magic Carpet““ and I'm definitely speechless. Partially from a long day (awake early for an early morning appointment), a very challenging Mon at work, but most of all for the content and writing. Can't wait to read more.

quietlycuriouskate I must read this: it's been on my shelf a while! 3w

Today I went in a real life bookshop for only the 2nd time in over a year. Treated myself to a physical book - a very rare occurrence these days. Pullman is one of my favourite writers & His Dark Materials is hugely significant in my life. So this purchase was a no-brainer really.

It also has black page edges! 🖤🖤🖤

vivastory I've thought about picking this one up so many times. It sounds fascinating! 3y

This is a book of essays about all things books, reading and writing. I have read it at a leisurely pace and really enjoyed it.🤓

Still haven't read any Pullman yet, but I'm digging this essay collection. Will probably make a run at His Dark Materials this year.

In an atmosphere of suspicion, resentment and hostility, many poems are interrogated until they confess, and what they confess is usually worthless, as the results of torture always are: broken little scraps of information, platitudes, banalities. Never mind! The work has been done according to the instructions, and the result...is measured and recorded and tabulated in line with government targets; and this is the process we call education.

Been a while since I've used this! I've read a lot over the past few months - this is what my library hold list decided I was going to read next.

Philip Pullman discusses the importance of stories and language, why every right thinking person should be a feminist and why recommended reading ages are bad for readers, authors and books #edbookfest

batsy How cool! Sorry, what did he mean about recommended reading? 6y
Moray_Reads @batsy oops, sorry. That was inaccurate typing while walking! It's the idea that all children's books should have the appropriate ages of the readers printed on the covers. He's very much against it! 6y
batsy Oh, OK! Thank you :) I agree with him 👍🏽 6y
Moray_Reads @batsy me to. I think it can be helpful if similar age ranges are shelves together in shops but books definitely shouldn't be labelled. It all depends on the child and the book! 6y
