Totem Poles and Railroads
Totem Poles and Railroads | Janet Rogers
5 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
Totem Poles and Railroads succinctly defines the 500-year-old relationship between Indigenous nations and the corporation of Canada. In this, her fifth poetry collection, Janet Rogers expands on that definition with a playful, culturally powerful and, at times, experimental voice. She pays honour to her poetic characters--real and imagined, historical and present day--from Sacajawea to Nina Simone. Placing poetry at the centre of our current post-residential school/present-day reconciliation reality, Rogers' poems are expansive and intimate, challenging, thought-provoking and always personal.

Pickpick

A challenging collection, so powerful that I had to read it in small doses. Mohawk/Tuscarora poet Janet Rogers addresses the relationships between #Indigenous peoples and settlers in Canada. To get a feel for her performance style, check her out on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccCh83pq7ew&sns=em

I love the playful use of text positioning in this #poetry collection. Also the way my expectations are shaken into awareness by seeing the poems alternate black-on-white and white-on-black pages.

LeahBergen Very cool. 7y

there is no equality a fallacy taught to you & me so we keep our dreams tamed the aim is not to strive to be equal but to be the best perhaps superior to another there is no equal only the best we all can be we live in this commitment a tangible energy action behaviour we confuse the land beneath us with our titles & make believe no equality without rights for all no rights for all not without my say so for me when I am free you look free to me
