Growing up is hard enough, but growing up in a hippie commune is way, way harder. Josie and Mitchell have spent their whole lives at the Indian Paintbrush Community Village, a commune full of colorful characters tucked in the mountains of North Carolina. Their once steadfast friendship has faded over the years as their outlooks on life have changed: Josie wishes she could spend all of her time at Paintbrush, planting tomatoes, hiking the trails, or throwing giant communal birthday parties, while Mitchell can't wait to escape the bizarre spiritual sharing and noisy community dinners. Luckily for both of them, high school is almost over. But with just two weeks left until graduation, Mitchell's mother makes a scandalous announcement: she's been cheating on his dad...with another community member. While Mitchell is forced to watch his parents' once happy marriage fall apart, Josie deals with her own family drama as her little sister starts making questionable decisions and hanging out with a much older and rougher crowd. As both Mitchell and Josie struggle to survive the end of their senior year, they find themselves becoming closer again. But as their friendship blossoms into romance, they're forced to deal with the reality of their very different futures - Mitchell leaving Paintbrush and Josie staying behind - and the inevitable difficult decision they will have to make.
