Barnum's Own Story
Barnum's Own Story: The Autobiography of P. T. Barnum | P. T. Barnum
4 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Barnum's career of showmanship and charlatanry was marked by a surprising undercurrent of honesty. In this classic of self-accusation and self-justification, he reveals the stories behind his hoaxes and publicity stunts. Illustrations throughout.

I know Litsy is for reviewing books but I consider this an important PSA - go see The Greatest Showman for one of the best movies you will ever see, and the best movie musical ever. It‘s a family friendly feel-good movie with simply outstanding music, which I cannot stop listening to. It‘s fun, emotional, touching, and a true celebration of humanity...in all our many forms. You will leave with a smile on your face!!! #obsessed #greatestshowman

BookNAround I‘ve heard from others that this is an amazing movie too. I have trouble with the idea of it though since PT Barnum was a not so nice person in real life. 6y
Christine The music is AMAZING. Perhaps I‘m singing/humming it too much around the house though as my son said tonight “Mom, enough Greatest Showman, please. You‘re obsessed.” 😜 6y
Bookgirl @BookNAround The movie does not portray him as the greatest man, just the “Greatest Showman” 😉 Honestly, the music is worth it, and it‘s all very loosely based on him anyway. (edited) 6y

Bookgirl @Christine never enough!!! I‘m definitely obsessed though 🤣 6y
CaitZ I took my 12 year old niece over the holidays and we both loved it. The music and dancing were wonderful. We both downloaded the songs as soon as we got home. 6y
Kaylamburson I saw it this weekend and absolutely loved it!! I'm obsessed with the This is Me dance number. 6y
LeeRHarry It'll take a lot to beat The Sound of Music 😏but I love me some Hugh Jackman! 6y
Nikki15 Also thought this was great!!! 6y
tif @BookNAround I have issues with PT Barnum being portrayed in such a positive light too. He was an awful man who only cared about money and not about helping his "freaks" feel accepted. I'm actually very disappointed in Hugh Jackman for even being in this movie 6y
Bookgirl @CaitZ @Kaylamburson @Nikki15 It‘s so good, isn‘t it?! @LeeRHarry ok fair point about The Sound of Music - my daughter‘s fav movie. I‘m going to go with a tie now that you reminded me of that gem! 6y
Bookgirl @tif I understand. The movie portrays him as a jerk, but a lovable jerk. It‘s definitely not a biography - there are a lot of historical inaccuracies. But, the movie is one big joyous outpouring that celebrates humanity, chasing your dreams, being true to yourself even when people don‘t accept you, love, and family. In my opinion, its message is what the world needs, and the pure happiness the music is bringing people is what matters the most. ❤️ 6y

I don't read a lot of memoirs -- these books are as close as I am getting.

The Sky Below I read recently and the other three are on my TBR list.
