Pickpick

A history of Henry Rawlinson, a serving officer of the East India Company in the 19th Century and his efforts to translate cuneiform and in so doing revealing the history of the Mesopotamian region and those that competed with him to crack the puzzle. A rather heroic figure, pursuing his interest between fighting wars and administering the companies interest in Persia. A word of warning, this book is surprisingly detailed, but was never a slog.

Describing an archaeologist recording the inscription at Bisitun in Iran 200ft up a cliff face in the 1840's. As some who suffers from acrophobia this entire passage had my nerves on edge.

Texreader Oh my! That's an amazing description 7y
