Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery | Cathryn Jakobson Ramin
2 posts | 3 read | 20 to read
The acclaimed author of Carved in Sanda veteran investigative journalist who endured persistent back pain for decadesdelivers the definitive book on the subject: an essential examination of all facets of the back pain industry, exploring what works, what doesn't, what may cause harm, and how to get on the road to recovery. In her effort to manage her chronic back pain, investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin spent years and a small fortune on a panoply of treatments. But her discomfort only intensified, leaving her feeling frustrated and perplexed. As she searched for better solutions, she exposed a much bigger problem. Costing roughly $100 billion a year, spine medicineoften ineffective and sometimes harmful exemplified the worst aspects of the U.S. health care system. The result of six years of intensive investigation, Crooked offers a startling look at the poorly identified risks of spine medicine, and provides practical advice and solutions. Ramin interviewed scores of spine surgeons, pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, specialized bodywork practitioners. She met with many patients whose pain and desperation led them to make life-altering decisions, and with others who triumphed over their limitations. The result is a brilliant and comprehensive book that is not only important but essential to millions of back pain sufferers, and all types of health care professionals. Ramin shatters assumptions about surgery, chiropractic methods, physical therapy, spinal injections and painkillers, and addresses evidence-based rehabilitation optionsshowing, in detail, how to avoid therapeutic dead ends, while saving money, time, and considerable anguish. With Crooked, she reveals what it takes to outwit the back pain industry and get on the road to recovery.

Just finished this - I have worked in healthcare since 1988 and specifically the realm of orthopedics and still yet some of the author‘s language used was over my head. I am afraid the book will not be so easily understood by someone outside the medical arena. I, however grasped on to all her research, made notes and hope to benefit myself. Sec 1 was difficult to finish knowing sec 2 would hold the answers in which I was searching. Great info!

A bit of an unusual recommendation from me, but: If you have back pain, or you know somebody who does, trust me. Read this. The first half of the book is a truly horrifying exposé of the failure of the medical establishment to treat back pain, and the second half is the author's exploration of treatments that actually work. It reads like a great New Yorker article and is sure to change a lot of lives.

Lizpixie I'll have to track this down. I know firsthand how much back pain is not only excruciating & life changing but is also mistreated or downplayed by doctors who aren't interested in how much agony you're in, they're more concerned with how much medication you take just to get up in the morning. 7y
AmyStewart Yep. This book will blow your mind. 7y
CocoReads Oh but if I'd just lose weight, all my back pain would be solved. (Cue furious eye rolling). 7y
