Mehso-so

This was an “Ehh” addition to the series for me. I‘ve really enjoyed Hoyt‘s Maiden Lane series overall—Darling Rogue and Notorious Pleasures being the best IMO. Dyemore dreamily (and longingly) wants to protect Iris from danger and himself—of course!—and sees her as the light to his darkness—a phrase repeated often—yet she constantly has to persuade him to take a chance on her and their relationship, which got a little old for me. #romance

CoffeeK8 Great series! My favorite is 6y

Pickpick

It's a pick due to being a quick easy historical romance. However, I have some reservations about it too: Definitely the darkest of the Maiden Lane series yet - but a bit melodramatic in places. The plot is straightforward and main characters well-developed but I wish the heroine was less of a damsel in distress. She is a brave spirit but unfortunately frequently allows her sentiments to get the best of her. Still not a bad read.

I'm in bed and going to start this ARC. But tomorrow is my Saturday to work, so I can't stay up too late. #currentlyreading#romantsy

robinb ❤️ her books! 7y
KarmonR Did you stay up too late reading or did you show some self control and put the book aside in a timely manner? (edited) 7y
nitalibrarian @KarmonR I, for once, was able to show some self control and didn't stay up too late reading. A rare occurrence. 😜 7y

I really liked this but something is off, maybe. The timeline feels too compressed, imo, to really allow the romance to develop. Also, I think Raphael's original plan - infiltrate the evil cult - was pretty half-baked (because you have to participate in something icky then?). Iris surprised me as a heroine. She may not fight with swords but she stands her ground and picks apart Raphael's mental blocks until he is able to function as a human again.

balletbookworm But this book gets dark, really dark. Hoyt had been dancing around depicting what the Lords of Chaos get up to for a few books now, but she really goes for it in Duke of Desire. Raphael has PTSD and I think Hoyt really gave a true depiction of what it was like to suffer from psychological trauma at a time when those issues weren't recognized. TW for descriptions of child abuse and rape. 7y
balletbookworm And I'll do a re-read between now and October when the book releases. Hoyt also did something interesting where she gave the villain some more page space, so I want to revisit that. Oh, and boooo, no Alf. Kyle showed up but no Alf. And if she hadn't sent Montgomery to Turkey on a diplomatic mission I would have loved to see Montgomery and Raphael playing off each other. 7y
balletbookworm However, 1,000,000 negative points to the cover designer. Got a scarred hero? Sure, put an unscarred dude on the cover. *eyeroll* At least put half his face in shadow or something (also, I feel like the cover model for Duke of Pleasure looks far more like Raphael than this guy). 7y
