What Momma Left Me
What Momma Left Me | Renée Watson

How is it that unsavory raw ingredients come together to form a delicious cake? What is it about life that when you take all the hard stuff and rough stuff and add in a lot of love, you still just might have a wonderful life? For Serenity, these questions rise up early when her father kills her mother, and leaves her and her brother Danny to live with their kind but strict grandparents. Despite the difficulties of a new school, a new church, and a new neighborhood, Serenity gains strength from the family around her, the new friends she finds, and her own careful optimism. Debut author Renée Watson's talent shines in this powerful and ultimately uplifting novel.

July #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks It has religious content which is not my thing but it was so beautiful that it didn't bother me. Narrated by Serenity, a 13 y/o girl (beautiful name) and how she and her brother coped with grief and many changes in their lives. I wish many children could have the support she & her brother had: their lovely grandparents, friends, family, church, school. It discusses domestic violence and abuse. Love the cover 4.5âï¸

TheAromaofBooks Great review! I don't mind religion when it is a natural part of a character's life/story. 4y
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks I saw this book from the mental health perspective where Serenity and her brother were experiencing PTSD and all these groups, including the church were helping them in the healing process, which we know can take years. Those grandparents were so incredible, I just remembered my grandma. They were pure unconditional love!â¤ï¸Love this book. I know real cases where real persons went through similar experiences😢 4y

Great read, and great first novel. Heavy material of abuse and violence explored through the lens of a 13 y.o. Perfect for youth, and an important read on building healthy relationships, knowing which secrets to keep (and which not to), and how to address the idea that "life is unfair" (and thus, worth giving up on). Could also be a Christian youth club read--every chapter takes a line from the Lord's Prayer. Happy to have found this author!

Wbabdullah Also great as a poetry club read--poetic and literary devices are explored in every chapter! 7y

Love this "Ode to Cake" and it's metaphorical motif for life throughout the book. "I sometimes forget all the painful things/ You've been through./ The beating, mixing, and baking/ Just so I can taste you." ?

"Momma is a song I can't forget. Her melody comes to mind and I realize that traces of her song are still here."
