Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos | Monica Brown
10 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, written by Monica Brown and illustrated by John Parra, is based on the life of one of the world's most influential painters, Frida Kahlo, and the animals that inspired her art and life. The fascinating Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is remembered for her self-portraits, her dramatic works featuring bold and vibrant colors. Her work brought attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and she is also renowned for her works celebrating the female form. Brown's story recounts Frida's beloved petstwo monkeys, a parrot, three dogs, two turkeys, an eagle, a black cat, and a fawnand playfully considers how Frida embodied many wonderful characteristics of each animal.

I loved the colors of the illustrations in this one and the way the narration about Kahlo‘s animals matched the descriptions of her. There are brief topics discussed about her life, but the book focuses mainly on her animals and how they helped her and were incorporated into her art. A fun read! #BBRC #PictureBook #LetterF

To my #WitchPleaseSwap participants & beyond: I‘m on a much-needed vacation & may be hard to reach for the next 10 days (read: multiple margaritas deep at all times & doing my best to see beautiful sights & not fall off of cliffs).

If something pressing comes up, I‘ll do my best to get back to you.

Enjoy your weeks, Littens! 🔮💖📖

I wasn‘t in love with the narrative of this biography. The use of the animals as comparison to her personality traits seemed forced and uneven to me. It‘s just not a style I like. (I confess, I ended up skimming).

That said, the art is stunning and I see why this was awarded a Pura Belpré honor for illustrations. I had a hard time deciding which page I wanted to feature! ?

I love the biographies by Monica Brown and John Parra.

Brown tells the story of Frida Kahlo and her art by telling the story of Kahlo and her animals, and drawing similarities between their qualities and Kahlo‘s. Through the story we see Kahlo‘s playfulness, strength, and passion emerge.

Highly accessible and beautifully illustrated, this is a great introduction to Kahlo for young elementary students.

3.5⭐️ This was a very entertaining story of Frida Kahlo and the animals in her life. How they lent her their happiness when she had little of her own. How they would constantly show up in her paintings. I think this is a very well done picture book of a remarkable artist. I like that they add a real life picture to Frida at the end. I wish they had also added some of her paintings that are talked about in the story and end matter.
