The Best American Noir of the Century
The Best American Noir of the Century | James Ellroy, Otto Penzler
3 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
James Ellroy and Otto Penzler mined the past century to find this treasure trove of thirty-nine stories. From noir’s twenties-era infancy come gems like James M. Cain’s “Pastorale,” and its postwar heyday boasts giants like Mickey Spillane and Evan Hunter. Packing an undeniable punch, diverse contemporary incarnations include Elmore Leonard, Patricia Highsmith, Joyce Carol Oates, Dennis Lehane, and William Gay, with many page-turners appearing from the past decade.

I was looking for a piece in the tagged book when I realized I've never posted a picture of it before. The transparent dust jacket over the illustrated hardcover makes this a #covercrush

#shortstories - last one of the night for #somethingforsept ! Here's an eclectic array from my crime fiction collection, from mysteries to the darkest noir to pulps - and all function as great doorstops, too. 😉

"Spurs" is a short story by Tod Robbins in 1926 is the inspiration for the movie "Freaks". The author's lexicon (being from the twenties) is real treat.
