Shadow Weaver
Shadow Weaver | MarcyKate Connolly
Fans of Serafina and the Black Cloak and The Night Gardener will devour Shadow Weaver, the first in a dark middle-grade fantasy duology that's filled with shadows, danger, magic, and has the feel of a new classic. Emmeline's gift of controlling shadows has isolated her from the rest of the world, but she's grown to be content, hidden away in her mansion with Dar, her own shadow, as her only company. Disaster strikes when a noble family visits their home and offers to take Emmeline away and cure her of magic. Desperate not to lose her shadows, she turns to Dar who proposes a deal: Dar will change the noble's mind, if Emmeline will help her become flesh as she once was. Emmeline agrees but the next morning the man in charge is in a coma and all that the witness saw was a long shadow with no one nearby to cast it. Scared to face punishment, Emmeline and Dar run away. With the noble's guards on her trail, Emmeline's only hope of clearing her name is to escape capture and perform the ritual that will set Dar free. But Emmeline's not sure she can trust Dar anymore, and it's hard to keep secrets from someone who can never leave your side.

A world where magic is blessed upon children in the womb during the passing of a comet in the sky! The magic is interesting in this world. And I loved that right from the start who know you can‘t trust a certain character but you watch as the MC does trust them and ever so slowly lose that trust. Shadow Magic, Light magic, wind magic! Ah so many types. I‘m so interested in picking up book 2.

I met MarcyKate Connolly at a show two years ago and bought her first book without knowing anything about it/her. I read the entire thing that night in the hotel room. Today I got to FINALLY tell her how much I love her books (and got the newer two signed)! If you like fairy tales I would HIGHLY recommend you check her out.

I really enjoyed this book - a bit creepy at times even for a children‘s book. About a girl who can control shadows and her own shadow is its own person who she thinks of as her best friend. Calli is my constant companion when reading. She likes to snuggle up close. #dogsoflitsy

This dark tale of friendship, magic, and secrets was enchanting. The main focus is a young girl who can control and speak to shadows. On the run from those who want to take her magic, she meets new people and the story of magic weaves into one of true friendship. Beautiful cover.

This children's middle grade fantasy sounds intriguing.

Emmeline can control shadows. Her only friend is her own shadow, Dar. Someone wants to take away her magic. Dar promises to keep this from happening if only she can make Dar flesh as she was once. She agrees, and the man ends up in a coma. Frightened, the friends flee. But Emmeline isn't so sure she can trust Dar anymore...

Book 1 in a duology.

Had no idea this was recommended for fans of the Disney Hyperion Serafina series; however, when I was reading it I kept thinking it FELT rather like a Serafina book. Ha! Good thing I adored those books. 😛💜

Shadow Weaver is an unique story about Emmeline, a girl with a special power to control shadows and Dar, Emmeline's shadow and only friend. On the run from a family that does not approve of her powers and the people that want to "cure" her, Emmeline questions the only life she has ever known with Dar, her influence, and the true meaning of friendship.

Here's a wonderful new series which begins with Emmeline, a child blessed with talent bestowed by a comet that passed overhead when she was born. This is a compelling but familiar world, where people with special talents are hunted by those who wish to use them to achieve power. It‘s a familiar construct, but there is potential here for this to grow into a well-loved series. Full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org Available Jan 2018.
