The Reluctant Widow
The Reluctant Widow | Georgette Heyer
5 posts | 16 read | 6 to read
"Lively, amusing...done to a turn!"-Kirkus Reviews A fateful mistake... When Elinor Rochdale boards the wrong coach, she ends up not at her prospective employer's home but at the estate of Eustace Cheviot, a dissipated and ruined young man on the verge of death. A momentous decision... His cousin, Mr Ned Carlyon, persuades Elinor to marry Eustace as a simple business arrangement. By morning, Elinor is a rich widow, but finds herself embroiled with an international spy ring, housebreakers, uninvited guests, and murder. And Mr Carlyon won't let her leave ... What readers are saying about The Reluctant Widow "Delightful and purely entertaining. The plot involves comedy, intrigue, espionage, cloaks and daggers, and things going bump in the night - served with a sauce of witty repartee that is the Heyer hallmark. Unforgettable." "One of my favorites!" "A delightfully funny and mysterious romp." "Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." - Publisher's Weekly

Let‘s see if I can squeeze in another oldie (a Georgette Heyer 😊) before year end.

Ruthiella You can do it! 👍 2y
mabell I‘ve not read this one! *checking shelves for copy* 2y
Cathythoughts Yes you can do it 👍❤️ 2y

TrishB Yes, and what a beautiful version. 2y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella @Cathythoughts @TrishB Thank you, my cheer team! 😆😆 2y
LeahBergen @mabell 😆😆 And did you find it? 2y
mabell No! I also have fewer in my Heyer section than I was thinking I had, so I‘m wondering if my organization is failing me. 😅 This one is now stacked, it sounds fabulous! 2y
LeahBergen @mabell I just rechecked my Heyers (when I started this one) to see what I still need! 2y
mabell Are you missing many? 2y
LeahBergen @mabell I‘m actually only missing one of the Regency stories and a couple of the historical ones. I don‘t have all of her mysteries as I don‘t think they are quite as clever as her Regency stuff. Do you? I own probably half of her Regency stuff in vintage hardcover and replace the paperbacks with those when I find them! 2y
mabell Though I do agree about her regencies being more clever, I‘ve read her mysteries (with the exception of 2 that I don‘t like) dozens of times - they are my comfort reads! I‘m afraid I am not eager to read the historical books. I have Lord John and a lovely copy of the Conqueror on my shelf, but I will likely never get to them! As for the other Regencies that I don‘t have yet (or have only in paperback) - like you, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt! 2y
LeahBergen @mabell I guess I need to give her mysteries another chance! I‘ve only read two, I think? Which ones are your favourites? 2y
mabell That‘s a hard one! They‘re all very different, it just depends on which one I‘m in the mood for. 😊 Envious Casca is a Christmas setting, so I‘m in the middle of my annual reread now. They Found Him Dead is a fun one. 2y
mabell It‘s easier to say the ones I don‘t recommend- Penhallow (there aren‘t words strong enough to describe how much I despised it), Unfinished Clue (the characters and subject matter are more of a downer), The Blunt Instrument (is ok, but again kind of a downer and just odd). 2y
mabell I realized I am quite opinionated on this 🤣 2y
LeahBergen @mabell Thank you so much for the recommendations! I‘m definitely going to try some more and will have this post to look back on to choose from. And I‘m with you on the historical novels…I have a couple on my shelves but never feel the urge to reach for them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

Pickpick

Latest audio book on the Heyer Revisit. And it is of my underrated faves - I forget how good it is until I re-read it. It's not as memorably good as Regency Buck/Devil's Cub/These Old Shades/Sylvester but it's very readable - with a emergency marriage, a proper Alpha-y hero who you're not quite sure is the hero or how it's going to work out and then a spy plot and some hijinx with dogs and amusing side characters.

ChaoticMissAdventures I just love the title. Reluctant widow, as opposed to an eager one? 😂 3y

Pickpick

I knew I enjoyed this before, but I'd forgotten 90% of the plot! Edward is, like many of Heyer's romance heroes, rather high handed and sure of himself in a way that is enjoyable to read but goes rather too far for my liking. The banter between him and Elinor is hilarious, though, and poor Nicky is too much fun.

I was so not kidding about needing a nice regency after that SGJ.
