The Edge of the Abyss
The Edge of the Abyss | Emily Skrutskie
Three weeks have passed since Cassandra Leung pledged her allegiance to ruthless pirate-queen Santa Elena and set free Bao, the sea monster Reckoner she'd been forced to train. The days as a pirate trainee are long and grueling, but it's not the physical pain that Cas dreads most. It's being forced to work with Swift, the pirate girl who broke her heart. But Cas has even bigger problems when she discovers Boa is not the only a monster swimming free. Other Reckoners illegally sold to pirates have escaped their captors and are taking the NeoPacific by storm, attacking ships at random and ruining the ocean ecosystem. As a Reckoner trainer, Cas might be the only one who can stop them. But how can she take up arms against the creatures she used to care for and protect? Will Cas embrace the murky morals that life as a pirate brings or perish in the dark waters of the NeoPacific? The exciting sequel to The Abyss Surrounds Us

Finishes things off nicely. I read this in a day too; the pacing just yanks you through them all in one go. The ambivalence of the relationship between Swift and Cas is nicely balanced; you can root for them while not feeling that it's super forced or that they're inevitable.

Mehso-so

This is the second in the series, they do not stand alone. The book does have a strong concept and solid writing. It‘s not very long, more like a novella. That makes the romantic elements and the resolution feel rushed.

If you're looking for a well written, diverse, exciting, fast-paced books full of pirates, yacht-sized monsters, and strong female characters this is the duology I'd recommend! There are so many amazing things about both of these books and the second one definitely doesn't have second-book syndrome! It's just as amazing as the first. These books hold some of my favorite characters of all time and amazing plots. I only wish it wasn't over!

I love Santa Elena. Sorry, not sorry.

If I had a movie, 20 books, a TV show, a play, and a musical...I still wouldn't have enough of this world and these characters 😭😍
On that note...this series deserves movies. Just saying. Or a TV show. Please?

The Edge of the Abyss is a book I would have loved as a teenager. It's not my top pick as an adult, but I'm not its target audience now anyways.

Pictured here with a vodka tonic (plus melted cranberry popsicle) to prove my supposed adultness.

magicineverybook I crazy adore this duology 7y

Suuuuper surprised with my January!! Granted that the vast majority of this month was buried in manga. 😻 I'm hoping my 2017 keeps going on like this. Also, that's supposed to be TSUBAKI-Chou, not Tsubaku...

Very much like the 1st book, there is plenty of action & adventures amongst sea creatures galore. But in book 2 we also get a fascinating dose of pirate politics, complexities of an adult relationship between folks with emotional & psychological baggage, as well as wonderful character depths. I'm so honoured I was able to read this early. If you loved book 1, you won't be disappointed with this!! 🐙🐙 #theedgeoftheabyss #ya #lgbt #diversebooks

Spending my weekend working on ARCs & I'm so happy that I get to read/review the sequel to The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie early!! It's called The Edge of the Abyss and releases in April 2017, published by Flux. I'm a few chapters into it, & it's still just as action-packed & intense as the first! Emotions are more tense, which is building a wonderful atmosphere of suspense & anxiety that's beautifully addicting! 🐙 #diversebooks
