Worlds from the Word's End
Worlds from the Word's End | Joanna Walsh
8 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
"Joanna Walsh is fast becoming one of our most important writers." Deborah Levy
This collection cements Joanna Walsh's reputation as one of the sharpest writers of this century. Wearing her learning lightly, Walsh's stories make us see the world afresh, from a freewheeling story on cycling (and Freud), to a country in which words themselves fall out of fashionsomething that will never happen wherever Walsh is read.
Joanna Walsh is the author of Hotel and Vertigo. She also writes literary criticism, edits at 3:AM and Catapult, and founded @read_women. She lives in Oxford, UK.

A small literary short story collection that lies somewhere between Laura van den Burg and Sofia Samatar in tone. There are a few stories set in dystopias that seem just one or two clicks off from our own (one is a society that has gradually decided words/lanuage was passé so that was interesting). There are some about being a book person.

There is one story, “Simple Hans”, that I really didn‘t like and it felt out of place in the collection.

Having a “book & beverage” and a “break” before diving into another round of data collection. #riotgrams #30daysofreadathon @bookriot @deweysreadathon

Such wonderful and quirky short stories. Such skilled writing. This author is clearly highly skilled with words. My favorite story was Bookshelves but none of them disappointed.

So I found a story about books and bookshelves in a book... How cool is that? I don't agree with the ending of the story... But with most of the things....

Here's a book of short stories due out in September. I know nothing about the author but look at that cover! ❤️❤️

batsy I have mixed feelings about her precious collection of stories. But this cover is brilliant. 7y
shawnmooney @batsy I just read your great review, and searching for it reminded me that @ReadingEnvy was reading that one too! 7y
ReadingEnvy @batsy me too... I felt like I enjoyed reading them but they have no staying power 7y
batsy @shawnmooney I meant *previous* not precious 😂 But now that I think about it, maybe parts of it were precious 7y
batsy @ReadingEnvy There's much to admire in her language. But you're right, there wasn't much to hold on to. 7y
