The Sibyl in Her Grave
The Sibyl in Her Grave | Sarah Caudwell
3 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Julia Larwood's Aunt Regina needs help. She and two friends pooled their modest resources and invested in equities. Now the tax man demands his due, but they've already spent the money. How can they dig themselves out of the tax hole? Even more to the point: Can the sin of capital gains trigger corporeal loss? That's one for the sibyl, psychic counselor Isabella del Comino, who has offended Aunt Regina and her friends by moving into the rectory, plowing under a cherished garden, and establishing an aviary of ravens. When Isabella is found dead, all clues point to death by fiscal misadventure. So Julia calls in an old friend and Oxford fellow, Professor Hilary Tamar, to follow a money trail that connects Aunt Regina to what appears to be capital fraud and capital crime. The two women couldn't have a better champion than the erudite Hilary, as once again Sarah Caudwell sweeps us into the scene of the crime, leaving us to ponder the greatest mystery of all: Hilary, him or her self. From the Paperback edition.

Themes: Whodunit Sherlock Holmes style, Dry British humour, Quick read

I‘m not ready to say goodbye to Hilary, Selena, Julia, Cantrip and Ragwort 😭 Sarah Caudwell‘s writing in this series was fun, engaging and kept my interest! I loved the wry British humour and the dialogue between all the characters was top-notch. I highly recommend her books 👍👍👍👍

erzascarletbookgasm I remember stacking this series years ago when @batsy highlighted it. I have yet to read them! One day, hopefully 😊 5d

quietjenn So glad you enjoyed the whole series! 5d
Aims42 @quietjenn I really did! I wanted at least another 20 books from her 😆 lol The only other book I could find by her was this tagged one. I put a hold on it at my library, but I have to wait a few days for it, it‘s coming from another library deep from their ‘stacks‘ 😆 4d
quietjenn Oh, let me know how that one is, whenever it shows up. I to wish there were many more. 4d
Aims42 @quietjenn I sure will 😁👍 4d

Happy Mother‘s Day to all the mamas out there! This quote from my current read (tagged) is perfect for today.

“I was soon afterwards comfortably settled in the saloon bar of the Newt and Ninepence with all that a reasonable woman could require for absolute contentment - that is to say, a glass of wine, a toasted sandwich, and a detective story I had never read before.”

This is a fun, very English, lighthearted murder mystery. Professor Hilary Tamar is a bit of an amateur detective and their friends won‘t stop teasing them about it but they do figure out the mystery… eventually. I was impressed by how smoothly the author avoided anything that would indicate Hilary‘s gender, less so by the shenanigans to avoid describing one relationship as gay. Didn‘t quite feel like every single dot was connected by the end.

shanaqui Huh. That sounds... interesting. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @shanaqui I think you‘d like it! And weren‘t you looking for books with post being sent? This is… I‘d say about 50% epistolary. 2y
shanaqui Ooh! I was, because I write reviews for Postcrossing's blog. Thanks! 2y
