The Case of the Gilded Fly
The Case of the Gilded Fly | Edmund Crispin
8 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
It is October 1940 and at Oxford the Full Term has just begun. Robert Warner, up and coming playwright known for his experimental approach, has chosen an Oxford repertory theater for the premiere of his latest play, Metromania. Together with his cast he comes to Oxford to rehearse a week before the opening, but Warner's troupe is a motley group of actors among whom is the beautiful but promiscuously dangerous Yseut Haskell . She causes quite a stir with her plots, intrigues and love triangles. When she is found shot dead in the college room of a young man who is infatuated with her, everyone is puzzled and worried most of the actors have had a reason to get rid of the femme fatale and few have alibis. The police are at loss for answers and are ready to proclaim the incident as suicide, but Gervase Fen, an Oxford don and professor of literature, who thrives off solving mysteries, is ready to help. The Case of the Gilded Fly, first published in 1944, is Edmund Crispin's debut novel and also the first Gervase Fen Mystery.

This arrived yesterday and has gone straight to the top of the bedtime tbr pile! I‘ve just finished reading my share of submissions for a short story competition and need some classic crime as a palate cleanser!

A reasonably good mystery bogged down with an overlong opening sequence (which turned out to be a witness account with the story really starting two chapters in), too many characters and Shakespearean references- as well as many outdated and frankly offensive attitudes towards women. The character of Gervase Fen is quite interesting but I don't think I'll be perusing the rest of this series.

Libby1 I read The Moving Toyshop from this series and had the same reaction. It hadn't aged well. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Libby1, I came pretty close to bailing - and that's a shame cause usually I love this genre! But yeah, definitely hasn't aged well. Reading Lumberjanes now to wash my disappointment away... 7y
rabbitprincess I liked The Moving Toyshop but could not for the life of me get through The Case of the Gilded Fly. Also weirdly I kept picturing Gervase Fen as Gilderoy Lockhart 😂 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @rabbitprincess, in other reviews I read, the moving toy shop has come up... I'd give it ago if I came across it but I won't be buying it... maybe because he is an odd mixture of charming/rude like Lockheart? All those Shakespearean references? Kenneth Branagh on the brain? 7y
rabbitprincess @thegirlwiththelibrarybag The mixture of charming and rude probably does it, plus the same first initial and the professor status. 7y

Current reading mood : went swimming (so cold you could see the mist floating over the water), washed hair, brushed hair whilst watching the 8 out of 10 cats episode with Jedward in Sean Locks team (it cheers one up immensely), read a chapter, someone finally gets bumped off and I'm happy mostly because it's one less name to keep track of...

That feeling of smug satisfaction when your pocket is big enough for your current read ☺️ (also my beloved car is pleasingly shiny)

tpixie Reminds me my car desperately needs a wash! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, mine probably does too but the work car park is right next to a building site so it feels a little pointless at the moment 7y
tpixie Your car 🚗 looks so shiny! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, ✨ silver is a great colour for cars... the windows are filthy tho 😉 7y
tpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag yes!!silver is the best!!! 7y

So many characters to keep track off.

No flies yet, gilded or otherwise.

Got distracted looking at old photos to find one for Mother's Day...
It's really no surprise that I'm a huge Disney fan with an overwhelming tbr pile 😂
(I don't wear moccasins tho)

[DELETED] 206653737 😂that's awesome! Making me want to look through old pics, but considering I just finished The Five People you Meet in Heaven old pictures would probably not be a good idea. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @bookish22, reliving happy snaps is never bad! Although it's made me realise that I need to make more of an effort to take photos now. 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 Absolutely, I used to be so good about taking pictures but find I forget now. I too need to get better. 7y

I'm not off to a great start 😂 one chapter in and then a lovely interruption in the form of a long distance call from my bestie - two hours later and I'm settling into chapter two with a cup of tea...

It's been a long time since I've read a book from the golden age of crime fiction (this was originally published in 1944)

It's coming back to me! I bought this on eBay because this particular edition (with the gorgeous yellow cover that caught my eye on Instagram) is no longer in print! The blurb promises a 'most idiosyncratic, eccentric and entertaining' detective WHICH SOUNDS GREAT!

merelybookish Cover is gorgeous! 7y
