Again to Carthage
Again to Carthage: A Novel | John L. Parker
1 post | 4 read | 1 to read
Again to Carthage is the "breathtaking, pulse-quickening, stunning" sequel to Once a Runner that "will have you standing up and cheering, and pulling on your running shoes" (Chicago Sun-Times). Originally self-published in 1978, Once a Runner became a cult classic, emerging after three decades to become a New York Times bestseller. Now, in Again to Carthage, hero Quenton Cassidy returns. The former Olympian has become a successful attorney in south Florida, where his life centers on work, friends, skin diving, and boating trips to the Bahamas. But when he loses his best friend to the Vietnam War and two relatives to lifes vicissitudes, Cassidy realizes that an important part of his life was left unfinished. After reconnecting with his friend and former coach Bruce Denton, Cassidy returns to the world of competitive running in a desperate, all-out attempt to make one last Olympic team. Perfectly capturing the intensity, relentlessness, and occasional lunacy of a serious runners life, Again to Carthage is a must-read for runnersand athletesof all ages, and a novel that will thrill any lover of fiction.

Pictured: My dad's books about running.

@Kammbia1 asked about novels about running, so I asked my dad, who has coached numerous state champ runners and teams (including 5 consecutive State Champion Cross Country teams) and ran literally every day until his legs prevented it.

"If you're looking for fiction, anything not written by John L. Parker Jr. is trash," he said before rattling off a half-dozen titles, all tagged in the comments.

mandapants Shut up. All those books are about running? I love running...never thought to read about it. I love this post. It makes me smile. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @mandapants These are underneath two solid shelves of fishing books. The man knows what he loves. 7y

ValerieAndBooks No Flanagan's Run here? (The book I mentioned on @Kammbia1 's post). Still a very impressive collection and congrats to your dad for all those accomplishments! 7y
Gissy Amazing! The last book I read about running was an audio book and it was more an autobiography by Haruki Murakami. I do a power walking but in my mind I'm an elite 😉 A couple of marathons finished give you that sensation! Now, I don't know if I can continue due to a foot condition! 😢But there is always some sports to do! 7y
ValerieAndBooks Also, I haven't read it, but what about 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @ValerieAndBooks I actually asked him about Flanagan and he said "I haven't read it" then he described the book to me and said, "Maybe I have read it and I just forgot I did. But I know I don't own it." (edited) 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Gissy @ValerieAndBooks I gave my dad the Murakami book a few years ago as a birthday gift! 7y
Gissy I think I will listen the audio book again, just to not give up. I can hardly run 8 or 10 miles without feeling pain! Sometimes 4 but I'm trying the bike and swimming just to do something. But when you cannot run, you coukd get depressed 😢But talking about this, motivates me so I will listen that audio book again! 🏃🏻‍♀️👍 7y
Kammbia1 I have read Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. You can read my review of it: http://marion-hill.com/book-review-86-what-i-talk-about-when-i-talk-about-runnin... 7y
Kammbia1 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Thanks for the post and recommendations. BTW, I just ran my 2nd 10k race today and my fastest PR of 1 hour and 5 minutes. Excited about that! (edited) 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kammbia1 That's awesome! If nothing else, you should check out the pre- and sequel to Once a Runner. They come highly recommended! 7y
