A bit of dark fantasy. This book follows people whose land has been invaded and now have to decide if they'll forge a new path ahead, or get stuck trying to get revenge for their people. Interesting read, with a sweet romance woved in.

Multiple thoughts on this one: my attention sometimes lagged due to uneven pacing but I admire its criticism of genre tropes respecting violence, power relations, and gender roles. (Points maybe missed by the cover artist, whose choice of model is odd for a story featuring a dark-skinned protagonist.) I'm curious about where these characters go from here, and have requested the next.

I gave this 40% to get going and I'm still not sold on it. There is stuff to like, but it's mostly the set dressing. The story is not working for me; I can't really see how it's going to get where it's going, and the writing is so flat.

I am thinking about DNFing this book. One reason being that I seem to be looking for excuses to do so! And then those other reasons, like the style tics that annoy me (everyone "cried" everything, even when the context makes that sound odd) and the slowness. I think I'll give it two more chapters and re-evaluate.

This is, so far, really slow and not working for me.

Day 5: Something Magical. The two middle figures are from World of Warcraft. The left one from the movie (though also the game) and the right was a mega blocks figure from the game.
