The King's Bed
The King's Bed: Sex, Power and the Court of Charles II | Don Jordan, Michael Walsh
6 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
To refer to the private life of Charles II is to abuse the adjective. His personal life was anything but private. His amorous liaisons were largely conducted in royal palaces surrounded by friends, courtiers and literally hundreds of servants and soldiers. Gossip radiated throughout the kingdom. Charles spent most of his wealth and his intellect on gaining and keeping the company of women, from the lowest sections of society such as the actress Nell Gwyn to the aristocratic Louise de Krouaille. Some of Charles' women played their part in the affairs of state, colouring the way the nation was run. Don Jordan and Michael Walsh take us inside Charles' palace, where we will meet court favourites, amusing confidants, advisors jockeying for political power, mistresses past and present as well as key figures in his inner circle such as his 'pimpmasters' and his personal pox doctor. The astonishing private life of Charles II reveals much about the man he was and why he lived and ruled as he did. The King's Bed tells the compelling story of a king ruled by his passion.

Mehso-so

30/150 While I think this audiobook was a little too long, it was an interesting look at the sexual politics during the reign of Charles II. After the defeat of Cromwell and his puritan forces, Charles II's reign was extremely hedonistic, more involved in frivolity and sexual conquest than running the nation. His many mistresses and lovers held more sway with the king than any of his ministers or advisors, affecting everything from foreign policy

RamsFan1963 to the nation's choice of religion. The treatment of women during this era was truly repulsive, passed from man to man, married off as mere children. 3 ⭐⭐⭐ 2mo

Looks like Charles II's most prominent mistress was not well liked by the public.

"What, doest thou stand here to fuck time?" -Earl of Rochester circa 1670sish.

He broke Charles II's sundial because it looked phallic. I guess he was frustrated by the King stealing all the good mistresses.

I finished the Four Queens by Nancy Gladstone. It was so good I decided to go with another history for my next book!

Only a King of England could make sex boring!!!
I'm in chapter five, and there are already several illegitimate children, an execution, and a kidnapping in the story, but I have read more exciting biographies of martyred saints.🙄😠🙄🙄
