Mehso-so

I have no interest in Sheilagh. She bores me and I don‘t like her. Unfortunately, Ned‘s missing-parents mystery really wasn‘t touched on for most of the book, but we did come back to it at the end. That, for me, was the most interesting part of the book. So because of that, I found the start and end much more interesting than the rest of the book. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Overall, I‘m rating it ok, but it definitely picked up at the end, not only when Ned finally found out what happened, but what happened after that. I listened to the audio, which had four different narrators. It was done well, although I still lost focus occasionally, but I don‘t believe that was due to it being an audio book. 2y

Pickpick

14-year-old Ned comes home to find it dark & his parents gone. It‘s 1936 in Newfoundland. Ned spends the next 25 years trying to solve the mystery of their disappearance. The saga of family secrets is slow-moving, but the multiple POV, told to great effect with 4 different #audiobook narrators, kept me hooked. I especially enjoyed the caustic wit of Sheilagh Fielding, a character first introduced in Johnston‘s Colony of Unrequited Dreams. 🇨🇦

DivineDiana Fielding was a breath of fresh air in The Colony of Unrequited Dreams! Glad to see she has resurfaced! 5y
Lindy @DivineDiana Johnston wrote a whole book centred on Fielding but I haven‘t read it yet: 5y
DivineDiana I did not know that! 😲 5y

Lindy @ladym30 I agree. I couldn‘t resist nabbing it, and I‘m sorry that I don‘t know who the photographer is, in order to credit them. 5y

Imagine a land so exacting and severe that it scared away the Vikings.

“Your hair, madam, looks like a briar bush!”
“No need to compliment me,” I said. “The wind deserves most of the credit. Which of the elements should we congratulate for how you look?”

They asked me how I got my limp. I told them I was wounded in a war of words, and of swords, a war of puns, guns and one of sons. I told them I hoped the word to end all wars would come before the war to end all words.

Very good story. Ned and Fielding are haunted by their own kind of ghosts and a mystery reveals family betrayal and secrecy. I need to read Custodian of Paradise now since it would have explained much of the back story with Sheilagh Fielding. #Canlit
