New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories (Slipcased)
New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories (Slipcased) | Arthur Conan Doyle
4 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
This monumental edition promises to be the most important new contribution to Sherlock Holmes literature since William Baring-Gould's 1967 classic work. In this boxed set, Leslie Klinger, a leading world authority, reassembles Arthur Conan Doyle's 56 classic short stories in the order in which they appeared in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century book editions. Inside, readers will find a cornucopia of insights: beginners will benefit from Klinger's insightful biographies of Holmes, Watson, and Conan Doyle; history lovers will revel in the wealth of Victorian literary and cultural details; Sherlockian fanatics will puzzle over tantalizing new theories; art lovers will thrill to the 800-plus illustrations, which make this the most lavishly illustrated edition of the Holmes tales ever produced. The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes illuminates the timeless genius of Arthur Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation of readers.

As a two-volume set, the annotated Holmes short stories has the highest page count in my Library Thing account, coming in at 1,878 pages, with an extra lxvii pages of prefatory material, totalling 1,945 pages
The longest single volume book I've read, at 1,892 pages, is the Bible, so long ago that my edition is signed by Adam, Eve and the Serpent! 🌿🐍

Bookwomble Leave aside dictionaries and thesauruses, and the longest single volume I've read for pleasure is a 1928 edition of Great Short Stories of Detection, Mystery and Horror, edited by Dorothy L. Sayers, at 1,231 pages 📖
(Probably too much info! 😏♾️)

BookmarkTavern Wow! Sherlock Holmes is longer than I thought it was! Thanks for posting! 4d
Bookwomble @BookmarkTavern This is an annotated edition with a lot of sidebars, essays and illustrations, so it does bump up the page count 😊 The companion volume with the four novels has a further 921 pages. For comparison, the Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes with just the canonical works is 1122 pages 📚 4d

"The Speckled Band" in which editor Klinger notes Helen Stoner was given Holmes's address by a client he consulted with prior to living at Baker St. He accounts for the discrepancy by speculating that Holmes billed her after his move, but isn't it as likely that she kept note of Holmes's new residence against further need of his services? He had by the time is this story established himself well enough that he was working for expenses only.

These are the two short story volumes out of their slipcase.

saresmoore They are lovely. 7y
vivastory I will definitely be getting the editions with the slipcase. It just doesn't feel right not to... 7y
Bookwomble @vivastory They are fantastic. They're a right bastard to read though: there's almost more annotations than story - I'm a slow reader at tge best of times, so it takes me forever to get through these. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, mind 😀 7y

vivastory Is Klinger a member of the Baker Street Irregulars? I'd be shocked if he wasn't 7y
Bookwomble @vivastory Yes, he is 🙂 7y
vivastory I have yet to read this one, but I love Dirda's work & it sounds really promising 7y
Bookwomble @vivastory It does sound interesting. I liked to get something Holmesian for Christmas, so ties might be it for this year. Thanks for the recommendation 😊 7y

Bookwomble @vivastory A few years ago I got the two volumes of short stories as a Christmas present, then the third volume of novels for my following birthday, which was just a few weeks later. I was a very happy person that winter 😊 7y
