I devoured this book with rapt veneration. This story is a testament to the human experience, painful & glorious, angsty to the point of it engulfing you like a physical presence that emanated from the page. The seductiveness of the river was contagiously palpable, the metaphor poignant. Devotion between a father & his son was beautiful, the grief causing your bones to ache. Divine intervention rouses love that chases away the dark. Exquisite!

This is one of those books that I can only beat to read once. I love it, it‘s still one of my top ten reads of all time. At the same time it utterly destroyed me. It was cathartic for me in dealing with my dads death but left me emotionally wiped out. I didn‘t read anything else for a solid month after this one. As someone who reads around a book a day on average that should tell you how much it occupied my heart and mind.
