Frederick Douglass: The Lion Who Wrote History | Walter Dean Myers
24 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
In this picture book biography, the late New York Times bestselling author Walter Dean Myers and acclaimed artist Floyd Cooper take readers on an inspiring journey through the life of Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was a self-educated slave in the South who grew up to become an icon. He was a leader of the abolitionist movement, a celebrated writer, an esteemed speaker, and a social reformer, proving that, as he said, Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. The story of one of Americas most revered figures is brought to life by the text of award-winning author Walter Dean Myers and the sweeping, lush illustrations of artist Floyd Cooper.

I didn't learn who this was until maybe my sophomore year of high school. Him, MLK jr. and Rosa parks were like the extent of my African American History, which is so sad because AAS history is American history and should be incorporated as such not just a single lesson here or there. That's why I think having books like these in the classroom early on are a great start to doing so.

This book is long, but is very important to America's history. Reading this book is several times would be good for an elementary classroom.

This book tells the fascinating life story of Frederick Douglass. He made several wise decisions in his life including learning to read, escaping slavery, speaking out for justice and even aid the union army. He was among the first African American men to be notable in America's history and it's important to recognize his story.

I love reading Walter Dean Myers. I have enjoyed reading his work since I was a little. This is a story about the life of Frederick Douglass and how he overcame life as a a slave.

my favorite part was the very first page it had a little snippet about his life and accomplishments but the illustration was so amazing. I loved how everyone was staring up at him and he had a serious face

I thought the story of Frederick was very interesting and inspiring. I have not heard much about him in my past school years. I thought the illustrations were so cool and creative

This biography is a picture book that has some really great illustrations. It tells of Frederick Douglass, a former, self-educated slave. He‘s a really important figure in history, so I like seeing this be geared towards kids and interesting them.

"If learning to read would make him unfit to be a slave, then that's what Frederick would do: He made the courageous decision to learn to read."

Well-written narrative (it is Walter Dean Myers) and beautiful art. My only complaint is that sometimes the dark text was placed on a semi-dark background which made certain passages more difficult to read.

Also, completely unrelated, he lived until 77!

This new book just arrived at the library this morning and all I could think was that the publisher must have been so freaking happy about Trump's comments on Douglass. Not that it should need much help in selling because it's written by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated by a CSK award winner. But still.

I placed a hold on it for myself!

BookNerdBritt He really is getting recognized more and more! He must be doing an amazing job. 😝 3y

MarriedtoMrT @BookNerdBritt 😆😆I really should send him a copy of the book. It is written at a reading level he *should* be able to understand but since he doesn't read it would probably be a waste. 3y
