Saint Joan
Saint Joan | George Bernard Shaw
5 posts | 15 read | 6 to read
This volume contains Bernard Shaws 1924 play, "Saint Joan". It is a chronicle play in six scenes, and an epilogue that revolves around Joan of Arc. It elucidates her immense personality, problems, and potential. As well as the play itself, Shaw also furnishes a number of chapters on Joan of Arc that offer interesting insights into her life and character. This interesting and thought-provoking play will appeal to fans and collectors of Shaws seminal work, and would make for a great addition to any collection. The chapters of this book include: Joan the Original and Presumptuous, Joan and Socrates, Contrast with Napoleon, Was Joan Innocent or Guilty, Joans Good Looks, Joans Social Position, Joans Voices and Visions, The Evolutionary Appetite, etcetera. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

One thing about Shaw's Joan--she's a good antidote to the selfishness and apathy I see in my professional life 🤦🏻‍♀️

#Heretic #NoFemmeber I wonder if Arthur Miller was inspired by this play--when I saw a production, it reminded me of The Crucible, especially the climax. Either way, it's fiery drama with an iconic historical character at the center. Lady Lamb's song references another heretic- at one point she seems to be consoling Gallileo on house arrest: "Let's ponder the true builders of the pyramids/And then let's order in." @Cinfhen

Pickpick

A great retelling of Joan of Arc's story that I absolutely loved until the epilogue. Witty and layered, even Joan has her flaws, and her persecutors are presented as more than caricatures.

And then there is the epilogue. No, Shaw, why?!! It turned a realistic and balanced historically based play into something that wanted to feel like a Shakespearean tragedy. The heavy-handed epilogue lessens the power of the play preceding it. #litsybingo

Wow. I am only in the preface to this (which is almost as long as the play itself), and Shaw is blowing my mind with his insight.
