Discovery of Heaven
Discovery of Heaven | Harry Mulisch
2 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
The Discovery of Heaven, Harry Mulisch's magnum opus, is a rich mosaic of twentieth-century trauma in which many themesfriendship, loyalty, family, art, technology, religion, fate, good, and evilsuffuse a suspenseful and resplendent narrative. The story begins with the meeting of Onno and Max, two complicated individuals whom fate has mysteriously and magically brought together. They share responsibility for the birth of a remarkable and radiant boy who embarks on a mandated quest that takes the reader all over Europe and to the land where all such quests begin and end. Abounding in philosophical, psychological and theological inquiries, yet laced with humor that is as infectious as it is willful, The Discovery of Heaven lingers in the mind long after it has been read. It not only tells an accessible story, but also convinces one that it just might be possible to bring order into the chaos of the world through a story."

The Discovery of Heaven | Harry Mulisch

Intriguing, It's an amazing new look on things. I love the presence of higher beings without any specific religion or moral code.

BarbaraBB I loved this one! 3y

#WhereInTheUniverse

One of my favourite Dutch books is this one. It is a chunkster that tells about all important things that happened in the 20th century, combined with the friendship between two men and a woman and a bit of religion. Almost too much, but for me it worked fine.

PSreads73 Possibly my favorite is Ready Player One. Author is from OH but I‘m from WV. I‘ll have to look into some WV authors. 6y
Liz_M Your favorite? Well Eline Vere was very good so I guess I should read this sooner than later! 6y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M You must, it‘s on the list 😀. But I forgot about Eline Vere when I posted this and I have to admit that Eline is even better! 6y

ofbooksandme @PSreads73 Ready Player One has been on my TBR for sooo long! 6y
ofbooksandme @BarbaraBB I have a map where I paint if I've read one book from that country and just thinking about it I don't think I've read a Dutch book. I'll be there in a few months on vacation so that might be a good way to get in the mood! 6y
PSreads73 @ofbooksandme I might read it again before I watch the movie. Movie releases March 29th. If it‘s even half as good as the book it will be worth watching. 6y
