6 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
In the third easy-to-read book about Penny the mouse, written by Caldecott Medalist and bestselling author Kevin Henkes, Penny finds a beautiful marble on her neighbor's lawn and must decide whether or not to keep it. With age-appropriate vocabulary, compelling characters, and a memorable storyline, Penny and her Marble is just right for beginning readers and was named a 2014 Geisel Honor book by the American Library Association. This annual award, given to the most distinguished books for beginning readers, is named for the world-renowned children's author Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. Kevin Henkes is known for his mouse characters, including Lilly, Owen, Chrysanthemum, Wemberly, and now Penny! In Penny and her Marble, the third book in the Penny series, Penny finds a marble on Mrs. Goodwin's yard and takes it home. But does the marble really belong to Penny? Kevin Henkes is a master at creating beautifully illustrated books that resonate with young children. The Penny books are new classics for beginning readers and will appeal to fans of Frog and Toad, Little Bear, and Henry and Mudge.

This MF is a Theodore Suess Geisel award winner. Penny and her Marble tells the story of a small mouse that finds a marble and must decide whether or not to keep it. Because it is an ‘I can Read‘ I would suggest using this book for IR. #ucflae3414su19

This sweet animal fantasy (F) book is a great beginning chapter book for students. Chapters are short and easy to read and a great stepping stone into more difficult chapter books. The book follows Penny on a journey with her marble and teaches readers about having a good conscience. DrSpalding Being that Henkes also writes for older children, I agree with your comment! He's an award winner and children enjoy his mice characters! ❤️📚 7y

This F book is really a really sweet read. Penny is walking down the road and she finds a marble in Mrs.Goodwins yard that she fell in love with. She takes it home with her and then feels guilty for "stealing it". Penny took it back and Mrs.Goodwin said she could keep it!

If you have free time with your students outside this could be a fun activity to do!

Does Henkes write a bad book? I don‘t think so. I love revisiting Henkes mouse family, and I loved to see that Penny was a chapter book for the early readers. Its is adorable, approachable, and teaches a lesson all in one. The man can do no wrong. More please.

StacksNShelves Nope, he doesn't, which is why his books were always my favorite. I still have my copy of "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" that my Mom got me from my very first Scholastic book order. 7y
