Suburban Gospel
Suburban Gospel | Mark Beaver
4 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
Suburban Gospel offers more than a look inside Bible Belt suburbia, circa Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majorityit's a tale of faith and flesh. Beaver invites us into a world filled with Daisy Duke fantasies and Prince posters, Nerf Hoops and Atari joysticks, raggedy Camaros and the neon light of strip malls. As much about the adolescent heart as the evangelical mind, the story explores similar emotional terrain as coming-of-age classics like Tobias Wolff's This Boy's Life and Mary Karr's Cherry.Suburban Gospel is a tale of growing up Baptist, all rightbut also of just growing up.

Mehso-so

Sweet remembrances from Middle and High School in the 1980's. Reads like a series of personal essays rather than a true memoir. Lovely and nostalgic but not a lot of meat to it. #DBF2016

It's halftime of the Falcons game and I'm settling in with Suburban Gospel. Realized that I may make it through this week's TBR list! Pretty rare that I stick to the list as I envision it on Tuesday. 🎉(also a big week for #nonfictionnovember )

Loving the #nonfictionnovember hashtag. A few days late to the party, but here's my non-fic TBR

I usually keep one non-fiction going at any given time, but haven't recently. I typically read 3-4 fiction per non. How do you all integrate non-fiction into your reading? Anyone else feel that non-fiction is daytime reading only?

Aseleener My goal for 2017 is to read more nonfiction. I was thinking maybe try to read one a month. But I am always at the mercy of library holds, so who knows how that will work out. 7y
[DELETED] 3323341091 i normally read two or three non-fiction at a time with a fiction tossed into the mix. 7y

Vexingcircumstance I don't read a ton of non fiction all the time because it depends on my mood and what non-fiction I come across. It tends to take me longer to read them too unless it's a biography that really pulls me in. Bios are the non-fiction that I read the most. Although I do like other types on occasion. And actually yea I do tend read the in daytime more. I prefer lighter fare for nighttime reading. 7y
Notafraidofwords I completely gravitate towards fiction, but I tend to read a fiction and a non fiction together. I read non fiction at night because I suffer from insomnia and I need some things to make me sleepy. 7y
MyNamesParadise Usually nonfiction is read alongside a fiction book because nonfiction on its own tends to bore me. Also, I pick books on topics I'm interested. Like Creative writing books because I want to write. I have ADD and IBS so I'll get books about those (not really self help but books that allow me to be aware of those conditions). It usually takes me a long time to get through a nonfiction. 7y
