Torrents of Spring
Torrents of Spring | Ernest Hemingway
3 posts | 11 read
First published in 1926, The Torrents of Spring is a hilarious parody of the Chicago school of literature. Poking fun at that “great race” of writers, it depicts a vogue that Hemingway himself refused to follow. In style and substance, The Torrents of Spring is a burlesque of Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter, but in the course of the narrative, other literary tendencies associated with American and British writers akin to Anderson—such as D. H. Lawrence, James Joyce, and John Dos Passos—come in for satirical comment. A highly entertaining story, The Torrents of Spring offers a rare glimpse into Hemingway's early career as a storyteller and stylist.

Got this book from a little free library and wanted to read it so I can release it back in the wild, After a couple false starts, this time I decided I will go through with it, being my chance to finally complete my July #BookSpinBingo card. And I did it!
Haven't read Hemingway in a very very long while and I enjoyed the writing but something seemed off. After I finished it I found out it was a parody of a book I am not familiar with. Overall OK.

claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks Finally a bingo on my July card. I love your #BookSpinBingo so I'm really happy to achieve something finally. This is a book I kept trying to finish for quite a while now - thanks again for helping me do so! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! I'm excited that the challenge is helping you tackle some books!! Great progress!!! 4y

Well, that was...something...I both liked this and felt it missed the mark. Parodies are difficult because they become dated. Hemingway wanted out of a contract, so he wrote this in 10 days, taking shots at the literary greats of the time, including his mentor Sherwood Anderson. But there are sparks of the beauty that is Hemingway yet-to-be, so...there‘s that...(picture is of Hemingway a little before he wrote this.)

Liz_M Woah, I am so used to the bearded older pictures. I had no idea he was this good looking! 5y
AshleyHoss820 @Liz_M Poppa Hemingway was a young hottie, for sure! (Side note: Google young FDR, Jr.!) 5y

I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I was familiar with the book that Hemingway was parodying.
