The Scarlett Letters
The Scarlett Letters: My Secret Year of Men in an L.A. Dungeon | Jenny Nordbak
9 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
Jenny Nordbak takes us to a place that few have seen, but millions have fantasized about, revealing how she transformed herself from a USC grad lacking in confidence into an elite professional dominatrix who finds her own voice, power and compassion for others. On an unorthodox quest to understand her hidden fantasies, Jenny led a double life for two years. By day she was a construction manager, but at night she became Mistress Scarlett. Working at LAs longest-running dungeon, she catered to the secret fetishes of clients ranging from accountants to movie stars. She simultaneously developed a career in the complex and male-dominated world of healthcare construction, while spending her nights as a sex worker, dominating men. Far from the standard-issue powerful men who pay to be helpless, Mistress Scarletts clientele included men whose fantasies revealed more complex needs, from Tickle Ed to Doggie Dan, from the Treasure Trolls to Ta-Da Ted. The Scarlett Letters explores the spectacularly diverse array of human sexuality and the fascinating cast of characters that the author encountered along the way.

This book is full of a lot of hard-core BDSM scenes, which should come as no surprise in a memoir by a professional dominatrix. It‘s interesting to see the author contrast how her own kinky behavior varies depending on whether she‘s working professionally or engaging with her boyfriend. She‘s very open-minded and non-judgmental about most of her clients. She‘s also not the best writer; the prose is fairly workmanlike. I enjoyed it regardless.

Exbrarian I once lived with a professional dominatrix. It was just work like any other for her. Our house mates also included a pornographer, a male prostitute with a day job, and a Diana Ross female impersonator who was never out of character. I still know him only as, "Diana!" 5y

This looks like it‘s going to be the memoir that I hoped Whip Smart would be.

This was a fast, entertaining read that I couldn‘t put down. So, of course, I read it all in one sitting. While this book may be about Nordbak‘s experiences as a dominatrix, there are some good insights about the human experience and love here. I‘m upset that I waited so long to read it!

I've picked up and then thought "this isn't what I want to read right now" about so many books lately. Here are two more I'm trying.

I want to read more paranormal romance. Throw your recs my way?

CoverToCoverGirl Lara Adrian, Gena Showalter, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kresley Cole and Pamela Palmer are all excellent but J R Ward is my favorite 6y
Dragon Rebecca Zanetti, Marjorie M. Liu, Nalini Singh , Elizabeth Hunter 6y
CoffeeK8 Ilona andrews, Patricia Briggs (slow burn romance over number of books) meljean brooks (Steampunk) and Thea Harrison, and two one offs. Burn by Suzanne Wright and a P&P version set in a world where Darcy is a fighter who rides a dragon 6y

CoffeeK8 @CoverToCoverGirl it‘s the P&P remake I never knew I needed! 6y

Not for the easily offended, pretty graphic kinky sex scenes - I thought it was utterly fascinating! 💛💙💚💜❤

Have you ever felt like you needed more kink in your life? Whether you want to experience it yourself or just read about someone else's adventures, this intriguing memoir is a wonderful starting point. The author's inside take on what could be considered some very questionable private activities proved fascinating. Vanilla life by day, unceremoniously non-vanilla life by night! Jenny's story was incredibly entertaining and even inspired. 4 stars ✨
