Mr. Flux
Mr. Flux | Kyo Maclear, Matte Stephens
4 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Martin and his neighbors eschew change until eccentric Mr. Flux moves in and shows them that change can be big or little or even fit inside a box, and not at all scary. A tongue-in-cheek tale loosely inspired by the 1960s art movement known as Fluxus.

Martin keeps riding his old red bicycle because his new red bicycle is too new and scary. Everything is predictable until Mr Flux moves into Martin's neighbourhood. And that's how Martin discovers that looking at the world in a new way is fun. A gentle lesson for all ages. 🇨🇦
I knew nothing about the Fluxus artistic movement before reading this whimsical #picturebook, but I immediately went to the internet to find out more.

"We don't like change around here."
"Oh?" said Mr Flux. "And why is that?"
"Because change is upsetting and we like things just the way they are."

I feel sad about library copies of books bound in paper on board. The ones with a matte finish are easily damaged by tape, as you can see in the photo. In a large library system, where books are requested and transferred between branches, they get a lot of tape stuck to them and quickly become defaced. ☹️

I love love love Mr. Flux because I love love love the Fluxus movement. Heady art concepts might be a hurdle for children, but I think this book presents Fluxus in a beautiful, engaging, and playful way. Here, Mr. Flux comes to a dreary town afraid of change and leads them by example to begin looking at life from a more fluid point of view. 💗💗💗 Kyo Maclear is a master, for sure.
