4 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
In Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, Peter Hook, bassist for the legendary, groundbreaking band Joy Division, takes readers backstage with the group that helped define the sound of a generation and influenced artists such as U2, Radiohead, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Unlike other books about Joy Division, Factory Records, or lead singer Ian Curtiswho took his own life just before the band's first U.S. TourUnknown Pleasures tells Joy Division's story from the unique perspective of one of the three surviving band members. Told with surprising humor and vivid detail, Unknown Pleasures is the book Joy Division fans have been waiting for.

This was strangely hard going (it took me a year to finish) and I'm not sure why. It's written in a conversational style which would normally make it an easy read, but I found it a little grating after a while. Fair play to Hooky, he's honest, even when that means he comes across as a grumpy childish dickhead.

arlenefinnigan I can see why the timeline lists interspersing the narrative were included but I found them a bit repetitive. It's a great comprehensive account of Joy Division's story though, and his reflections on Ian Curtis' death are really moving. 3y
TrishB Agree with all of that! And I‘ve met him and agree with your assessment too 😁 3y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB I posted this review on Facebook and funnily enough, you're not the only one saying this...... 3y

If you want to read the story of a Joy Division this is the one to read. Peter Hook has all the facts and stories that a fan wants to know. If you grew up listening to 80's New Wave this book will not let you down
