Lanark
Lanark: A Life in Four Books | Alasdair Gray
Lanark, a modern vision of hell set in the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow, tells the interwoven stories of Lanark and Duncan Thaw. A work of extraordinary, playful imagination, it conveys a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion is to go on trying. First published in 1981, Lanark immediately established Gray as one of Britain's leading writers, compared with - among others - Dante, Blake, Joyce, Orwell, Kafka, Huxley and Lewis Carroll. This new edition includes an introduction by William Boyd as well as the author's fascinating addendum, the 'Tailpiece' (2001).

I finished a book! I actually started this at some point in 2020, and got derailed by a wild year (two moves, new job, etc.), but somehow was able to pick this right back up without missing a beat. Rating this a pick for sheer ambition and creativity, despite my frequently furrowed brow while reading.

This book, you can judge by its cover. It is phantasmagoric, inscrutable, and ever and ever weirder—yet it retains coherence and never feels arbitrary in its oddities. It also has the best meta-fictional sequence I‘ve ever read.

#commonwealthauthors I'm not a fan of the commonwealth and hope to one day see an independent Scotland 💙pictured are my a few of my favourite Irish and Scottish authors unfortunately I don't think I'll see a united Ireland in my lifetime #marchintoreading 💙📚💚

TrishB Same. I think the commonwealth is just too uncomfortable these days in light of colonial history. 7y
DeborahSmall @TrishB Totally! I find it shocking that it's recognised never mind celebrated in places! 7y
LeeRHarry I volunteered at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 here in Melbourne and I still have amazing memories of the people I met there. It was a truly special time for me, and from what I could gather, the athletes themselves. It was less about the name of the games but the chance for people to get together and celebrate doing something they love. That's a positive in my book. 7y
DeborahSmall @LeeRHarry I enjoy them too. I went home to Glasgow for parts of it in the last games. Definitely have positives out of it 7y

You suffer from the oldest delusion in politics. You think you can change the world by talking to a leader. Leaders are the effects, not the causes of changes.

I read this book when I left home for the first time and was feeling lost. This book didn't make me feel "found", but it helped me be less afraid of feeling lost. I love it more than anything.

DeborahSmall I read this just when I move from Glasgow to Ireland. I love it. He's a fantastic author and artist, I've been lucky enough to meet him a few times....he's quite a character, very introvert and shy in person 😊📚❤️ 8y
