Wizard of the Crow
Wizard of the Crow | Ngugi wa Thiong'o
In exile now for more than twenty years, Kenyan novelist, playwright, poet and critic Ngugi wa Thiongo has become one of the most widely read African writers. Commencing in our times and set in the fictional Free Republic of Aburiria, Wizard of the Crow dramatizes with corrosive humor and keenness of observation a battle for control of the souls of the Aburirian people. Fashioning the stories of the powerful and the ordinary into a dazzling mosaic, this magnificent novel reveals humanity in all its endlessly surprising complexity. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A thoroughly enjoyable book. It‘s satire that works. You never lose the connection to real life while exploring absurdities galore. There‘s characters to root for and against. In many bizarre ways wa Thiong‘o explores the experience of African countries in dealing with post-colonialism. If you‘re ready for a chunky read that is both fun and poignant then these is the book to pick up.

It only took me 20 days to get through this huge novel but boy was it worth it! What an amazing, fantastical, political and religious commentary!

#AprilBookShowers #shelfie This is just one of my shelves ?. The toy cars are my nephew's, who is now 17 and living in Sydney. So many of his toys are still here. He said he feels about cars how I feel about books, and that he will be "hurt" if I got rid of his cars to make way for MORE books ("You haven't even read all of your books!"). When he was younger he displayed them on the shelves to be near the books, lol. And here they have remained.

🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️ This book was amazing. It is very dense and it took me a month to read it but it was worth it. It's a satire of African politics but some of the themes are relevant to current events. Like how a ruler tries to control how he is portrayed in the media or how he surrounds himself with sycophants to bolster his fragile ego. But amongst all of the corruption there is hope and people who want change and are willing to fight for it.

kalinichta I am digging that cover. 7y
Foxyfictionista @kalinichta Me too! I am unashamed to admit that I was drawn to it instantly when I saw it on the library quick pick shelf. 😃 7y

The most fun you'll have reading about a (fictional) African dictatorship. This is a big, rowdy book; a funny take on a serious issue; most importantly, it's just a really great story. --Caitlin

HardcoverHearts I actually owned a copy of this that I got at a library sale but never cracked it open. Kicking myself now. 8y
Dogearedcopy Is this satire? Do I need to have any sort of background knowledge of Kenyan political history to read this intelligently? 8y
Caitlin Yeah, it's satire--and I don't think you need to know anything specifically about Kenya to appreciate it (at least I didn't when I read it). 8y
TulipBooks Ooh, I've got this on my tbr, can't wait to read it! 8y
