Blood, Bullets, and Bones: The Story of Forensic Science from Sherlock Holmes to DNA | Bridget Heos
11 posts | 6 read | 60 to read
Blood, Bullets, and Bones provides young readers with a fresh and fascinating look at the ever-evolving science of forensics. Since the introduction of DNA testing, forensic science has been in the forefront of the publics imagination, thanks especially to popular television shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. But forensic analysis has been practiced for thousands of years. Ancient Chinese detectives studied dead bodies for signs of foul play, and in Victorian England, officials used crime scene photography and criminal profiling to investigate the Jack the Ripper murders. In the intervening decades, forensic science has evolved to use the most cutting-edge, innovative techniques and technologies. In this book, acclaimed author Bridget Heos uses real-life cases to tell the history of modern forensic science, from the first test for arsenic poisoning to fingerprinting, firearm and blood spatter analysis, DNA evidence, and all the important milestones in between. By turns captivating and shocking, Blood, Bullets, and Bones demonstrates the essential role forensic science has played in our criminal justice system.

After reading Blood, Bullets, Bones for book club last month, we had a chance to visit the Renwick Gallery‘s Nutshells Exhibit to see first hand Frances Glessner Lee‘s work of art. The models are still used in the study of forensic science at Harvard 60+ years later! Very cool.

Godmotherx5 Going there is on my bucket list. Glad for you!!! 6y
Cortg @Godmotherx5 This particular exhibit is there until Jan. 28th. It‘s been extremely popular! 6y

This was our book club choice for December. I was 20 pages shy of finishing before the meeting (sigh) but I finished it up this evening. It‘s basically the history of forensic science. I thought it jumped around a little too much, but I‘m glad I read it, learned some new things, and overall enjoyed the stories.

Finally! 4 of the 14 people in this house have ventured off to go shopping. The little one is down for a nap and suddenly the house is calm & quiet! I‘m going to start my book club book in the living room, my old reading hideaway growing up.

This was really fun! It was more anecdotal than heavy on the science, which worked for me - too much scientific info goes right over my head...

Now to pick out a new lunchtime book 😸

Three down, at least four to go before I'll let myself start anything new...
What should I finish up next? I'm about halfway through all of these

I don't read a ton of nonfiction, but I'm really loving this!

Not very good but not horrible either. It felt like she jumped from story to story without any rhyme or reason but some of the information was still interesting.

Ghosts are not holding my attention this morning (because they don't have hands to grasp it?) so I'm moving on to a little light true crime. ☠️🔪⚰️📚
