The Doll Collection
The Doll Collection | Ellen Datlow
11 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
The Doll Collection is exactly what it sounds like: a treasured toy box of all-original dark stories about dolls of all types, including everything from puppets and poppets to mannequins and baby dolls. Featuring everything from life-sized clockwork dolls to all-too-human Betsy Wetsy-type baby dolls, these stories play into the true creepiness of the doll trope, but avoid the clichés that often show up in stories of this type.Master anthologist Ellen Datlow has assembled a list of beautiful and terrifying stories from bestselling and critically acclaimed authors such as Joyce Carol Oates, Seanan McGuire, Carrie Vaughn, Pat Cadigan, Tim Lebbon, Richard Kadrey, Genevieve Valentine, and Jeffrey Ford. The collection is illustrated with photographs of dolls taken by Datlow and other devoted doll collectors from the science fiction and fantasy field. The result is a star-studded collection exploring one of the most primal fears of readers of dark fiction everywhere, and one that every reader will want to add to their own collection. Stories in this anthology by: Stephen Gallagher, Joyce Carol Oates, Gemma Files, Pat Cadigan, Lucy Sussex, Tim Lebbon, Seanan McGuire, Carrie Vaughn, Stephen Graham Jones, Miranda Siemienowicz, Mary Robinette Kowal, Richard Bowes, Genevieve Valentine, Richard Kadrey, Veronica Schanoes, John Langan, Jeffrey Ford

I just read this story. Anybody else read it? 😬

Tracyantoon Yikes! That looks super creepy. No thanks! 😳 4y
Reagan Loved that short story 4y
vivastory @Reagan I was rereading certain passages before I reached the big reveal, trying to decide if he was taking dolls or kidnapping girls. I kept vacillating but I was still a bit shocked by the ending. I think it was his obsession with the doll in his therapist's office made me think he was just talking about dolls. 😬😱 4y

LeahBergen No, but I‘d probably like it! 😮 4y
magyklyXdelish There‘s a short story collection of hers with this one as the title that I read last week. This was the ONLY story in that book I liked. Could see where it was going but the reveal was still good 4y

xxjenadanxx Let me know how Toil & Trouble is! It's on my list but I've read mixed reviews. 5y
jb72 I‘ve not read any of those yet. 5y
BeansPage @jb72 the two at the very top are brand new ARCs that just came out and they are part of a trilogy of which I have already read the first. I've read bits and pieces of my HP Lovecraft books but I have not even touched the others yet. I think now is the time! 5y
BeansPage @xxjenadanxx I will! 😘😘 5y

Mehso-so

This collection had a "no evil dolls" rule, which made for an interesting anthology that strayed further from horror than I expected. There were a few I really enjoyed but I felt like 17 was probably a few too many for this anthology.

Mehso-so

This is a collection of short stories (maybe only 5 or 6), and when the editor was reaching out for submissions she specified no evil doll stories. I wanted to be creeped out because, dolls, right? But only the first and last stories had that effect. So I'm giving this a so so. Maybe dolls aren't that creepy after all.
