Fresh from his spectacular (Cleveland Plain Dealer) debut in Dark of the Moon, investigator Virgil Flowers takes on a puzzlingand most alarmingcase, in the new book from the #1 bestselling author.John Sandfords introduction of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers was an immediate critical and popular success: laser-sharp characters and a plot thats fast and surprising (Cleveland Plain Dealer); an idiosyncratic, thoroughly ingratiating hero (Booklist). Flowers is only in his late thirties, but hes been around the block a few times, and he doesnt think much can surprise him anymore. Hes wrong. Its a hot, humid summer night in Minnesota, and Flowers is in bed with one of his ex-wives (the second one, if youre keeping count), when the phone rings. Its Lucas Davenport. Theres a body in Stillwatertwo shots to the head, found near a veterans memorial. And the victim has a lemon in his mouth.Exactly like the body they found last week. The more Flowers works the murders, the more convinced he is that someones keeping a list, and that the list could have a lot more names on it. If he could only find out what connects them all . . . and then he does, and hes almost sorry he did.Because if its true, then this whole thing leads down a lot more trails than he thoughtand every one of them is booby-trapped.Filled with the audacious plotting, rich characters, and brilliant suspense that have always made his books compulsively readable (Los Angeles Times), this is vintage Sandford.

Thoroughly entertaining. Edge of my seat several times, engrossed in the unfolding mystery and climaxing action.
Not jazzed about the (singular) casual homophobic comment; of two Native American Vietnam vets depicted, one 'troubled', other ready to fight 'us vs them'- stereotypes?
Oh, yeah, and various forms of violence are detailed.
Basically, if you can survive the insensitivity and gore of an 80s action movie, you will enjoy this book.

DEL CAPSLOCK- as in Delete and Capital Letter Lock?
Did this dude just realize he couldn't come up with a name, then looked to his computer keyboard for inspiration?!

I do love it when they call out the tropes of the genre.

"Somebody's across the lake with a high-powered rifle, and you're gonna say, 'The a**hole's name is-' and pop! The killer nails you. So could you give me his name? Just in case?"

Virgil Flowers #2. A little convoluted maybe, with the current crime stretching all the way back to Vietnam. I had trouble following the details but I like Virgil almost as much as I love Lucas. And I love love love Sandford‘s writing.

DGRachel I ❤️ that f***ing Flowers! 🤣🤣 6y
CocoReads 🤣🤣 he‘s pretty awesome 6y
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m a Lucas fan but I haven‘t read any Flower books yet hmmm.. more books to be added to my lists. 🤷‍♀️ 6y

CocoReads @CoverToCoverGirl someone gave me a tip that if you read both Lucas and Virgil in publication order, there‘s no spoilers that way. Since both series have the same characters popping back and forth. Heat Lightning is where Shrake meets Shirley Knox (and I know that was mentioned in the last Lucas book I read), and the republican convention is coming to town.... 6y
CocoReads So know I‘m trying to catch up in Virgil to where I last left off in Lucas... 6y
TiredLibrarian Love Virgil too. It's interesting that Sandford's style of different in the 2 series: more elaborate with Flowers; more clipped with Lucas. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl Thanks.. reading things in the right order is one of my reading quirks. 6y
CocoReads Mine too. Every once in awhile I don‘t need to do that, but mostly I do. 6y
