One Dead Spy
One Dead Spy | Nathan Hale
7 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
Nathan Hale, the author s historical namesake, was America s first spy, a Revolutionary War hero who famously said I regret that I have but one life to give for my country before being hanged by the British. In the Nathan Hale s Hazardous Tales series, author Nathan Hale channels his namesake to present history s roughest, toughest, and craziest stories in the graphic novel format. One Dead Spy tackles the story of Hale himself, who was an officer and spy for the American rebels during the Revolutionary War. Author Hale highlights the unusual, gruesome, and just plain unbelievable truth of historical Nathan Halefrom his early unlucky days at Yale to his later unlucky days as an officerand America during the Revolutionary War. Praise for Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: One Dead Spy "An innovative approach to history that will have young people reading with pleasure." Kirkus Reviews "Readers interested in American history will enjoy these graphic novels... Comic panels of varying sizes enhance the real-life events and support the stories over-the-top humor... the writing is accessible and entertaining; author Hale s style gives readers an insider-y, you-are-there-type scoop." While not the best spy, Nathan Hale was an American hero during the Revolution! After he says his last words on the gallows, he's swallowed up in a history book and tells of great moments in history, or the future, to the hangman and a Redcoat. Both funny and factual, this is the way to get kids interested in history! Grown ups too, maybe ones who read other stuff during history class... 🤷‍♀️

Things I definitely don't remember learning in school: that during the Revolutionary War, Long Island, technically Brooklyn, was key in water surveillance of the British fleet. I know there is a Spy Trail across the north shore that we thought about traveling on, but I had no idea this even happened! Even School House Rock left this part out! #LongIslandRocks #lovemyisland

mrp27 School House Rocks was the best! (edited) 4mo

*Random Memory jogged by Nathan Hale*

I had a social studies teacher in 7th grade, Mr. Hubbs, who wore baby blue socks with sandals and would make an obscure history joke and say, "There's a little humor in that, you know."

melrailey I LOVE these books. They are so good and I feel like the history sticks with me. 4mo
IamIamIam @melrailey I definitely didn't pay much attention in school as I am now!!! LOL, they're spectacular!!! 4mo

Before being hanged Nathan hale gets the chance to tell his story and that of some of the revolutionary war battles in the form of a graphic novel. My son at 4 is probably a little young, but loves it, we are on our 4th reread. #historybooks

In our family, #somethingborrowed means one family member has loaned a book to the other to read. My 10-year-old son loaned me this graphic novel knowing how much I love history. #booktober

ValerieAndBooks Aww. I love it when one of my kids tell me I should read this or that book (doesn't happen often). 3y
Eyelit That's sweet! 3y
Texreader @ValerieAndBooks @Eyelit I've got some pretty amazing kids. My son had us read the first few chapters together. He's reading high school level and still loves for dad to read him to bed and for us to read together. We are lucky parents. 3y
