I liked the mysteries/ reasons for the murders and I loved the setting- on a luxury train through the middle of Australia. But I've already grown tired of the breaking of the 4th wall and the conceit that narrator is talking us through their writing process as the book progresses. Mostly a pick but I'm going to try to avoid this type of plot for a while.

I Know You | Claire McGowan

Mehso-so

This was good enough but I doubt I'll remember it in a few weeks. Rachel finds a body while walking her dog in the woods near her house. As this is not the first body she has found- and as it did not go well for her last time- she runs back home and does not report her find but the police quickly tie her to the murder. We alternate between this events and the previous murders. Between a pick and a so-so.

The Assistants | Camille Perri
post image
Mehso-so

This was a quick read which didn't quite live up to my hopes. Tina is the assistant to an obscenely rich media mogul. An expense report error results in her having access to exactly what she needs to pay off her school loans and finally start being able to save. She takes the opportunity but someone noticed and wants enough for her own loan. The situation spirals from there. We're given multiple examples of the ridiculous, unnecessary

bookandbedandtea money the boss spends so we won't feel bad about these thefts but I'm still torn. Do these young women deserve to be crushed under the weight of their debt & inability to get ahead? Certainly not! Are their actions wrong? Yes. The ways the scheme was discovered & resolved felt very flat & anticlimactic to me. I may have had fewer moral debates with myself if this were a more dynamic story. 😉 The MC was very uneven and boring. 2d

Annie Bot | Sierra Greer

Pickpick

I was very invested in Annie but this was an uncomfortable read- as I'm confident the author intended. It explores personhood, control, emotional abuse, and other important topics through the use of robotic helpers. One can buy a Bot to do the cleaning, be a nanny, or a sexual partner. Annie is described as Doug's girlfriend but, of course, she has no choice in that. Or Indeed in anything:

bookandbedandtea what she wears, where she goes (nowhere), or how she spends her time when he's at work are all determined by Doug. Annie is unusual in how fast she is advancing emotionally and mentally and she makes a choice which changes her a great deal and causes a rift between her and Doug. I was engrossed and could not wait to see how it ended. The ending was a little quiet but u was happy with it. 5d
bookandbedandtea I would have liked to understand the Bots better: Annie doesn't get cold from weather but she can feel pain; how is she capable of feeling emotions (a question that is becoming relevant as AI becomes prevalent); was she build with more ability to reason, question, and feel than a cleaning Bot or do they all stay out with the same capabilities? We also learn that there are make bots for all the same functions as the female bots and I'd love to have 5d
bookandbedandtea another book from one of their perspectives. A sequel exploring the experience of other bots would be appreciated. Especially if it includes any of the new bots patterned after Annie. 5d

This is a wonderful story about following your dreams. 77 yo Jenny auditions for Britain Bakes and is astonished that she makes it on the show. She stretches herself creatively and makes new friends. However, she's been living with a painful secret for decades- one she never told her husband- and as she works her way through the baking show memories from the past begin to haunt her. Her secret comes out in a way she didn't expect, causing a lot of

bookandbedandtea distress for herself but also her absolutely saintly husband, Bernard. It all ends happily though. The supporting characters really shine in this book: Bernard, of course, wonderful man; Azeez is charming; Rose and her family are full of love and support for Jenny and Bernard. One quibble; 6d
bookandbedandtea I wish the flashbacks had been done in a couple of big chunks. As it was, I felt we went back and forth too often and made both stories a little choppy. 6d

The full cast and plethora of suspects made this a very enjoyable listen. The information contained in the letter written by one character was necessary but it felt so bizarre that anyone would have written that stuff down so I felt like that was a week spot. Otherwise this was a good background to my work day.

I did some #audiopainting yesterday. The Atwood- talk about your SHORT stories- is an amusing homage to friendship (with a message about either not waiting to get your revenge or simply letting things go) that I was enjoying until it came to an abrupt end.

I have rarely read such beautiful nature writing in a work of fiction and I don't believe I've ever before read a book in which the MC is a location. I'm not a huge fan of short stories so I occasionally struggled with the regularly changing cast of characters but some of the stories touched me deeply and I can tell this is a book I will remember. Again I'm wishing I was in a book club as I'd love to have some in depth discussions about this one.

The Women: A Novel | Kristin Hannah
post image
Pickpick

I have mixed feelings. The good: this book taught me a lot about the Vietnam conflict (my father was stationed there for a time but I can count on one hand the number of times he's been willing to say ANYTHING about it); the descriptions of the beauty, heat, and smells of the country as well as the fear, blood, devastation, exhaustion, despair- and occasional hope and satisfaction- of the field hospitals were vivid; the friendships and the ⬇️

bookandbedandtea sense that while it was the worst time of their lives it was also the best times of their lives; and, most importantly, shining a light on the female veterans and the fact that many of them came home with PTSD but were dismissed by the VA (and everyone) as not needing help because they weren't in combat. The bad: there was too much focus on romance (every man Frankie met fell for her 🙄), and there was too much Frankie. I would have liked this ⬇️ 2w
bookandbedandtea better if it was told in 3 POVs as I felt the lack of Barb's and Ethel's voices and felt the story of "The Women" would have been better served by giving us more women's perspectives.
The really bad: ⬇️
2w
bookandbedandtea not one but TWO love interests coming back from the dead. I liked Jamie a lot and was glad to see him again but, still, it was a bit much. 🙄 2w

The Book of Essie: A novel | Meghan MacLean Weir

Pickpick

I wish I had a book club to read this with because there is much to discuss! This ended up being deeper and darker than I expected. I was impressed by both Essie & Roarke. She meticulously planned her future and, while she needed him to be able to pull it off, she saved him too. Every time we delved into Libby's backstory I was annoyed because it pulled us away from Essie's & Roarke's stories but I did understand that her history was important ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ because it's how Essie knew she could trust her. I can't say much more without spoilers but I felt such a strong sense of betrayal by some of the characters and just wanted to hug Essie. Fortunately she knew what she needed. I was cheering for her, and Roarke, the whole time. 3w

Albert has spent his whole life hiding who he is til his upcoming forced retirement (& a significant loss) prompt him to make some changes. Soon he's connecting w his coworkers, dressing better, & searching for a lost love. He makes a connection w 19 year old single mom Nicole who is grappling w a difficult situation with her boyfriend & they help each other in ways both practical & emotional. A couple quibbles (spoiler comment) but it's a pick.

bookandbedandtea This dragged a little in places and I felt it could have lost a few pages. More importantly, I'm not sure how I feel about him and George at the end. I almost feel the story would have been stronger if he'd searched for George, given them both closure, but found a new love for himself along the way. 1mo

This 2nd book in the Kate Burkholder series is pretty good. I'd rate it higher if it were a standalone but there's a fair amount of repetition from the first book of both Kate's and John's pasts/the effects on them as they investigate current horrific crimes. And the crimes in this book are truly horrific. It was at times difficult reading. I think I will read the 3rd book at some point in hopes that they won't relate as much to the next crimes.

I enjoyed these short stories. My favorite was The Other Side Of The Road- very menacing with a twist I did not see coming. The Bad Friend was another standout- it's a rather depressing exploration of someone never satisfied with what they have. I'm really enjoying this series with its mix of authentic-feeling (to this non-cop) police procedural with supernatural elements. I like that Tony McLean 1) will not stop digging on a case until he gets the truth, even when that tenacity is detrimental to his career, 2) cares for the people on his team, 3) his response to the supernatural situations he finds himself in- a mixture of acceptance and exasperation- amuses me.
