The Persephone Code | Julia Golding

#ARC #NetGalley

A travelling theatre actress and a former military surgeon are thrown together to find the Hellfire Club's secrets her brother hid before his death. A letter with clues sends them on a dangerous scavenger hunt followed by men who are ready to kill for those secrets. Naturally the two MCs are attracted to each other, but have their reasons/flaws not to turn their collaboration into a dalliance.

This could turn into a series.

julesG #52bookclub24SummerReadingList #GoingForGold Lots of goals in this book: finding the murderer, finding the hidden item/treasure first, keeping safe, keeping the clues hidden,... + author's name + gold on cover 4h

Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for this #ALC !

When a small group of bookstore employees are told to immediately shut down their bookstore, they decide to stay, refusing to leave to show the importance of the store to the community. The reader sees the story from the perspective of the manager Jo, as she and a half dozen staff keep the online bookstore sales running.

It‘s a fun premise. There is the power of books and their special ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ connection to people. There is growth of the characters, which was nice to see. The narrative itself seemed a little longer than necessary, and Jo‘s frequent repetitive thoughts was a little too much for me sometimes. There is a side story that I‘m not exactly sure why it was added, other than a humanity aspect. Okay listen. The voice narrator was good. I did like the book quotes throughout! And who wouldn‘t want to be in a bookstore overnight? 2d
Hooked_on_books What an awesome premise! What a bummer it wasn‘t a better book. 1d
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books It is a great premise! I‘m sure the author modeled it after Powells, since the story takes place in Portland. But, it just did not grab me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1d

The book contains twelve short stories based on Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' & 'Emma'. There are nine based on P&P, & three for Emma, but I enjoyed the P&P ones the most. They were all rather good, but two stood out to me: the one from the view of 'Hill', one of the servants at Longbourn, & the story based on what happened to Anne de Bourgh following Darcy's rejection.

OutsmartYourShelf I've read one or two retellings or reimaginings of P&P by different authors & they do vary in quality quite a bit. With regards to these stories, I thought that the author captured Jane Austen's style of writing for the new characters rather well in most cases. It was a diverting, if short, read & a complete change compared to my recent reading choices. I very much enjoyed reading the stories. 4 🌟

Think Twice | Harlan Coben

Wow another great Harlan Coben novel. I am a fan of the books and this was another great one. The plot is fast paced and builds to one hell of an ending. Im not sure i can remember the last time when a book had me on the edge of the seat to see how it would turn out. The mystery itself is clever and leaves you guessing. I had theories but was only partly right. I loved Myron and of course Win, their friendship is incredible. #Netgalley

Self-styled 'Indian Herb Doctor', Francis Tumblety, has long been considered one of the suspect pool of people rumoured to have been Jack the Ripper. This book looks at Tumblety's life in both America & the East End of London, & finds that there is circumstantial evidence that suggests that he may have been involved in both the assassination of Abraham Lincoln & the Ripper killings. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Flamboyant & the consummate hustler, throughout his life Tumblety was in trouble with law for his 'confirmed bachelor' lifestyle (he was gay), yet mostly managed to skate on the charges thanks to his connections to the great & powerful. Despite Tumblety's later denials, one of the conspirators, David Herold, worked for him, & Tumblety had supposedly been seen in the company of John Wilkes Booth. 3d
OutsmartYourShelf Over twenty years later, Tumblety was known to be in England around the time of the canonical five Ripper murders. Indeed he was thought a possible suspect yet disappeared before he could be properly questioned.

I thought this was a very interesting read, with a lot of information about both the assassination & the Ripper murders that I had not read before. Tumblety has always been a peripheral suspect - mentioned but usually quickly discounted,
3d
OutsmartYourShelf & yet there are intriguing connections between him & both cases. The most compelling evidence to me is the collection of uteri that Tumblety was inordinately proud of alongside his noted hatred of women, & the two small brass rings which were similar to the ones reportedly removed from the body of Annie Chapman, one of the Ripper's victims. Alas, neither of these proves anything beyond conjecture. (edited) 3d

OutsmartYourShelf There's not a great deal of actual evidence of Tumblety's involvement in either case, but it is a very readable book. 3.5🌟

Not what I expected, based on the blurb.

It's the end of the 21st century. A class reunion on a luxury space station. There are two ensembles of characters, the ones "below stairs" and the ones "above stairs".

The rich people "above stairs" have rich-people-problems. Foremost, how to outwit the MERIT system that could get them to Mars. They have known each other since school. They have drifted apart, but are happy to ⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC

julesG to reconnect, again mostly to exploit their connections to their own advantage.

The crew "below stairs" is fed up with being invisible, having less value than the rich people. They work on the luxury space station to fund their families' lives down on Earth, which becomes less habitable by the minute.

This could have worked, but it was packed with a bit too much of everything, in my opinion:

- too many POV

⬇️
4d
julesG - so many plot angles: dying Earth, "Capitalism is bad!", exploited workforce is enraged, murder mystery?, MERIT system benefits the rich straight population, another murder mystery in the past timeline, ...

- not a single like-able character

- why all the kinky stuff?

I have no words to describe how much this book enraged me…So I believe that it served its purpose.

Jane and John‘s relationship is full of red flags from the start. But they persist, get married, have a child…

And what Manguso does is take you along through a horrible roller-coaster ride that you don‘t want to get down from (because the writing is THAT good!).

Read this!

The stakes are even higher in this mystery when Vivian Kelly is the only suspect in a murder. She has a week to find another suspect for the corrupt commissioner, or she‘s going to jail.

This series just keeps getting better! The countdown did an excellent job of ramping up the tension, we learn more about Honor, & all the side characters are so good! Everything just built. Loved Viv‘s persistence & her reliance on her community. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
