Another okay read. I liked the own voices element and the short chapters. But I thought the writing was choppy, there was too much going on with the plot, and Joey, the love interest, left me unimpressed.

I was in such a reading slump in May--it took me a while to finish my only read, Vassa in the Night, and then I didn‘t pick anything else up until the end of the month.

But I did finish a book off my physical TBR, completed a booked2019 prompt, and am still on track with my Goodreads challenge!

An action dystopian where climate change resulted in floods, death, and a faction called the Wolfpack.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book, but could have done without the romance, and found myself struggling through the second half. I think this would have been better as a duology.

#booked2019 #clifi

Cinfhen Great review!! My #CliFi also started strong but second half was bonkers 🤪I hated my selection 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage I think publishers sometimes push romance into books where it doesn‘t belong. Thanks for the review! 2w
4thhouseontheleft I didn‘t realize this was clifi and I have it on my bookshelves! I might choose this too since I have been meaning to read it. 2w

sheffner @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks! Yes, and in this book, the love interest wasn‘t even introduced in the first hundred pages. 2w

There have been a few recent weird reads (Strange Grace, Sawkill Girls, The Hazel Wood) that I‘ve enjoyed, but this one missed the mark. It was darker and more gruesome than I‘d expected.  The beginning of the book pulled me in, but I found myself disconnected and apathetic about the characters and plot by the middle. An surreal, dark retelling on an unfamiliar folktale, but this just wasn‘t for me.

4thhouseontheleft I like the original source folk tale, but I also thought this book was too weird and gave it a 👎 when I read it a few years ago. 1w

I read “The Truth About Forever” for the first time when I was seventeen. I loved it just as much then as I do now, on the eve of my 30th birthday.

I love the writing style, the well-written characters, the emotion behind the storylines and romances. Wes is still one of my all-time favorite book boyfriends. Most of all, I love how reading any of Sarah Dessen‘s books is just like coming home.

Just okay for me--I liked the overall plot, characters, and the sprinkling of Irish history and knowledge throughout.

But I struggled through the second half and ended up just skimming the last few chapters. There were too many plot points going on and while the ending was realistic, it left me feeling sad and disappointed.

I really enjoyed this book! Very easy to get into, refreshing, and emotionally hard-hitting. Can't wait to read more by the author.

What I loved:

* The diversity of the characters and how real they were

* Themes about academic pressure, depression, and mental illness that felt genuine and not preachy/cliched

* Frances' relationship with her mom

* The relationships between all the characters

A Southern, Gothic retelling of Bluebeard.
I was not familiar with the original story, but this retelling stood on its own.
I loved the slow, dreamy setting, but some of the plot points didn‘t sit well with me.
(As a survivor of emotional/psychological abuse, the actions of Monsieur de Cressac were hard to read at times, but I‘m glad the author portrayed him as abusive, instead of romantic.)

I adored this book--the writing style, the setting, the magical realism, the heartbreak and creepiness, the relationships, the feminist themes and strong women.

What I liked:
Natty was so adorable and funny
The writing style and humor
The family dynamic was very well written and true to life
While not a traditional romance story, there was some different romance elements and the love of a family/mother/parents.

What I didn‘t like—spoilers in the comments.

Overall, a melancholy, emotional, mixed read for me--but I did like the author‘s writing style and may check out another one of her books.

sheffner What I didn‘t like—Shandi‘s sudden feelings for Walcott. The end of Bridget and William‘s storyline. And the rape/sexual assault storyline. 7mo

Brand. At least until after the New Year's chapter. Then, he just seemed to do a 360 and was almost scary angry.

What I didn't like:
