I didn't realize I was reading a sequel at first and perhaps that would have mattered. I love his word choice and writing. He makes horror painfully beautiful and that was like reading poetry. However, the story just didn't go anywhere. The last 15 pages some action showed up and the end was bad-ass, but it wasn't enough of a pay-off for me.

Picked a portable book for the holidays. I usually won't read the book if I've watched the story but I'm really enjoying this so far. It's like a behind the scenes tour of the show!

Meh. The book is fine, but the mystery solving theme is just not my jam.

The author felt rather pretentious at times, but the book was a fascinating, quick read. Loved it. Stay away if detailed descriptions of death and bodies makes you uncomfortable.

I didn't realize this was actually from a talk she did. Tiny little book. Read it while I ate lunch. If I had known, I probably would have preferred to watch the talk online.

Before We Visit the Goddess: A Novel | Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

A beautifully written quick read. Divakaruni excels in in honestly portraying our shared humanity by writing characters that I really care about.

I wanted to really love this book, but I had trouble connecting with the main character. She was flat for me. Perhaps the flatness of the characters was intentional...but for a novel about slavery, I personally wanted to feel more.

A decent book. I read it to my 8-year old and we had fun with it. Not really a scary book. Sweet and funny with some adventure.

I had to bail on this one. Beautifully written but just to cute and whimsical for my taste.

This book was sad and a little depressing. It did not hold my interest through most of it. The beginning was amazing and so was the last 5th or so, but the middle was a desert for me. His other book, "God is dead", was so good I still think about it years after reading it.

Haig's book, The Humans, was one of the best books I have ever read, so my expectations were high for this one. A decent story about family and vampires.

I had to bail on this one. The writing is very beautiful and the author is skilled. But I wasn't interested enough in the subject matter to wade through the extreme melancholy of this book. Not a bad book, just not for me.

Wow, I devoured this book in one day! A quick read. As a fledgling atheist, I really enjoyed Seth's story. So much of it resonated with me. Recommended for anyone who grew up fundamentalist Christian and has doubts or is apostate. You are not alone!

This book was just OK. I didn't really engage with the main character and the book has pacing issues. It was very slow till the last 5th or so then it rushed to the end. Not horrible, but not great.
