I hate to say this because my heart breaks for Dave Pelzer and the torture he endured as a child at this hands of his alcoholic mother----however, this book read like a documentation of the abuse and not about his emotional or growth experience. There is such an opportunity here to surface to the reader his surely deep emotional turmoil during and after his childhood. The book left me asking "why" too many times.

This book reminded me again of how much I love Elizabeth Strout. Her writing is so sparse, so lonely, that it cuts right to your core. I found myself inside Lucy Barton, her thoughts, her experiences. I think many of us must share her story.

A friend recommended this to me so I thought I'd check it out. This is not my typical genre but I thought it was an ok book. My main problem was with the main character basing her entire life and happiness around a man. I might recommend this to someone who wants a light and fast read.

I adored this book. Full of whimsy and fun. I laughed on nearly every page.

The premise of this book is interesting; however, I wish the author had spent more time exploring the "why" of solitude and less time on the "how" of Knight's experience. That said, I still enjoyed this book and it prompted a lot of thinking for me around the excesses of life and how humans try to fill their life and time with "things" and, even, some relationships that, in the end, will never lead us to contentment.

bitterbear I don't think Knight really gave him answers to the why... 7y
Mlogsdon816 I agree with you. I wish he'd explored more about solitude to fill in that gap. He did a bit of superficial exploration but it wasn't enough for me, I guess. 7y

This book is a powerful account of the epidemic of sexual assaults on college campuses using Missoula as a case study of sorts. Rape victims have been treated with disgust by the justice system for decades and this book highlights an eye opening account of exactly that experience. It should be required reading for everyone.

Cheryl Strayed has a beautiful way of untangling life and providing words for the sometimes unexplainable emotions coursing through us. I really enjoyed this one.

Partially through this book and it has been an eye opening experience. I love reading Jon Krakauer who always gives such powerful accounts of human experience.
