Really loved it but was frightened by it too. Another example of how ordinary people can do terrible things almost out of habit or because every body else does it without thought. Trying to think of a current comparison. Our habit of bad gossiping is one I think.

Can anyone suggest some contemporary horror writers on a par with C18, C19 and C20 writers eg Poe, Shelley, Stoker, Machen, Jackson. Thanks Maxine

Have just finished listening to this on audio book.
Though not quite contemporary it is a modern Horror Classic
Any thoughts?

I am continuing to go back to real ‘Victorian Gothic‘. Rereading the classics of Stevenson, Shelley, M R James, Hawthorne, O Henry, Melville, Flaubert, Gaskell etc etc.
#I really enjoyed Dracula and I can see his influence on others.

Am currently well into Stokers “Seven Stars”

Just Superb

Along with other classics like Frankenstein The Turn of the Screw
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
The Island of Dr Moreau
All by Arthur Machen

Would love to read some modern books of this quality and Genre please suggest any Maxine
