NYT notable book. A beautiful story about a boy in France who becomes a man during WWII. Brave characters from a chef dedicated to preserving France through cuisine and a madame who masquerades as nobility and is part of the Resistance. Like the quote for some reason.

Story of a slave who obtains a taste of freedom but as usual freedom is not free. He is never free since he lives during a time where he is not viewed as an equal and therefore does not have the same opportunities as he is not white. . What could have been is a theme. Really liked it

Very beautiful last couple of sentences. An account of life in prison so expect lots of depressing moments but there also small slivers of happiness. Reinforced my thoughts that making a right or wrong decision is not as straightforward.

Well written backstory of Circe from the Odyssey with an interesting twist in the end which I really enjoyed! I would now like to go back and read the Odyssey. Maybe the new translation by Emily Wilson.

Why did she keep saving him? Dana travels to the antebellum south to save a boy who is a son of a slave owner. . She travels back to her time whenever her life is in danger . Each stay is a little longer and Dana sees Rufus grow up to become a young man. Is it a story about the “worst” kind of love that is selfish and twisted or a story about a man who can not overcome his environment? Still thinking about it.

What a lovely quote that applies in so many situations. This book is sad and scary. How much she needed and loved to drink. .

This is my second book that I‘ve read that takes place in S Africa. It was a very eye opening and funny read. I laughed out loud when Trevor was explaining how he was laughing when the principal was punishing him. The eye opening part was how there were different classifications based on the color of your skin. Japanese were white?

The dialogue was great and characters were very funny. It would probably make a good book on cd!
