The Broken Road: A Novel | Richard Paul Evans
Pickpick

I‘m surprised - I liked this book! I picked it up more out of obligation than anything else. Have to know what it‘s about in case someone asks. Instead of giving it a quick scan and then putting it back on the shelf I wound up taking the time to read it. It is a good story with strong characters. There is a simplicity to the story that is refreshing. (FYI, don‘t follow this with a book by Umberto Eco. It takes some adjustment.)

Sometimes I cringe when I hear words like "fur-babies". Katz's book offers a different way to look at our relationships with animals. He believes we can communicate with them; indeed we should communicate with them for our own good. But, respect for animals is important. We need to treat them in a manner that acknowledges the important role they play in maintaining a healthy environment. A good book that gives you something to think about.

G-Man | Stephen Hunter
Pickpick

This is a fun book. Great for summer reading. If you enjoy stories about mobsters, bank robbers and the FBI in the thirties you'll love this book. I have to confess that he talks a lot about guns - in detail. I tried to stay with those passages but I just don't know anything about guns, so I got a little lost once or twice. I finally just skipped those paragraphs when they started. It didn't have any effect on my enjoyment of the story.

Adrenaline | Jeff Abbott
Pickpick

This audiobook is the first book in Jeff Abbott's Sam Capra Series. The exciting and suspenseful story is set in glamorous locations, with scary bad guys. Capra is complex. His actions can be surprising but they always fit the situation. He is definitely not a one-dimensional character.
The production was well done. Kevin T. Collins narrates performing several accents well. This is the perfect audiobook for a road trip.

This is the time of year when people ask me for a good summer read. This book of short stories is definitely on that list. It's hard to choose a favorite but I really liked The Wainscoting War and How To Be A Grown-Ass Lady.

The High Window | Raymond Chandler

Classic detective novel. Chandler is also a master of description.

Second title in the Kopp Sisters series. A really good story with strong, well-drawn characters. What makes it all the more interesting is that this is based on a true story and these characters were real. For more information on the background check out amystewart.com. She has photos and background on the people and stories.

Binti: Home | Nnedi Okorafor
Pickpick

Good book. Second in the series. I believe she's working on the third one now - which is good because she left me on the edge of my seat! Binti is continuing her path of self-discovery. She returns to her home to go on a traditional pilgrimage. And she does make a pilgrimage, just not the one she expects. The book does not wrap everything up at the end. Instead it leaves the reader and Binti looking for more answers.

Binti | Nnedi Okorafor

I am not usually a science fiction reader. But, I heard Nnedi Okorafor speak at the Texas Library Association conference and was intrigued. I enjoyed the story. The main character is interesting and I look forward to reading more about her in the next book!
