AFTER COLUMBUS PB | Herman J. Viola

Reads better than a straight-up text book. *But* it's hard to for me to fully embrace this when the author falls into the old-white-expert category. The introduction is written by an indigenous person explaining even though that the author is a white-guy, he really is a good-white-guy. Next time, I'll seek out an indigenious author. I might keep this now that I'm homeschooling. The illustrations and photos are valuable.

This was my second read, and I fell more in love... mostly. #audiobook #dw2020reads

Pros: The farm life and small town life routines will appeal to Little House fans. Many passages about the plains landscape touch my heart and bring up memories. As I get older, I sympathize with more and more characters.

Con: Part 2, Chapter 7! Slight spoiler as that chapter's all romanticized racism. Feel free to skip it as it doesn't affect anything crucial.

effani That racist chapter really took me by surprise and soured me on the whole book when I reread it recently. Your advice to skip it is wise! 5d
DWpalooza Right?! I was shocked that I hadn't remembered it from my first read though. 4d

Simultaneously read and listened to Lunar Chronicles # 3. Con: this book spends lots of time with its most flighty characters. (No space pun imstended.) Pros: the stakes are raised. And most of the characters gain depth.

This my second read of the story, and this time around, it gave me Firefly vibes. Firefly was a one-season-wonder sci-fi/western TV series by Joss Wheadon. Similarily, Marissa Meyer balances her large ensemble well. #dw2020reads

My favorite of the Lunar Chronicles. My second time around, and this time, I read and listened with my kiddo. I had a thrill when she brought it home from the school library! #2020reads

I need more audio books narrated by Eddie Redmayne in my life. His whispy voice can be frustrating in movies, but it suits headphones so well!

Finished this audiobook over Thanksgiving. Inspired to listen to it since the 'Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky' story has been popular on social media. This is a story about racial discrimination, the loneliness and friendship of rural neighbors, and a tame romance. FYI, I had no idea that there is a genetic disorder that causes blue tinged skin and chocolate colored blood! Learned something new from this short historical fiction novel.

Reading with Mimi (6yo): "For one thing, I liked hearing about soliders crossing the sea (the Delaware River). I also like that Jack and Annie find notes all the time in the treehouse. I like to hear about kids getting into trouble like me. I thought it was neat that Jack noticed George Washington's face on a dollar bill. I didn't know that. This book is good for anybody."
