This is a book that people will talk about, with wonderfully drawn characters, covering over 50 years, spanning from NYC to sunny California, drug addictions, AIDS, adoption, families. An impressive piece of work, even more so when you consider this is a debut novel. A testament to families, those we are born into and those we create by literal or figurative adoption of others, the ability to forgive others, and maybe even forgive ourselves.

Eden Hill | Bill Higgs
Pickpick

It's the early 1960's in Eden Hill, Kentucky, Virgil and his wife Mavine own a gas station there, named "Osgood's" because that's his last name. Other than residents, people rarely come to Eden Hill, so when a young husband along with his pregnant wife show up looking for directions back to the highway, everyone notices.

Alaska's beauty has a brutal edge. From a distance it appears calm and pristine, but the reality can be harsh, unyielding. Chaos is part of its nature, a reflection of the chaos in the couple's marriage, their lives, while at the same time adding to their chaos. A perfect storm gaining momentum.

acorter Glad to find someone else on here who has read Vann! There are a few reviews for Aquarium, but that's it. Did you read Legend of a Suicide? I just finished it and it reminded me heavily of Caribou Island. 8y

Written in flowing, deceptively simple prose, the story of Dixie Dupree is one you won't forget quickly. Covering a wide range of issues: alcoholism, depression, physical abuse, rape, suicide and more. Dixie's voice makes all the difference, adding enough charm and goodness to balance out this dark, captivating debut novel.

Based on the lyrics to the song, this is a charmingly illustrated story about a young boy and his grandmother hosting a gathering in their tiny house, which manages to expand to fit them all inside as the company grows in number.

"Whether we are writing fiction or nonfiction, journaling or writing for publication, writing is an inherently therapeutic activity. Simply to line up words one after another upon a page is to create some order where it did not exist, to give a recognizable shape to the chaos of our lives."

There's not much that's not contained in this story: mystery, Indian culture, romance, a dark criminal underground, medical crimes, relationships so tentative, so fragile, with stories of their own in the making. Full review @ www.goodreads.com/review/show/1759000980

A charming coming-of-age memoir, a loving tribute to her family- those she was born with and those who are her family by virtue of love, marriage, and a bond that is made of love. ARC provided by Shadow Mountain Publishing for review Full review @ www.goodreads.com/review/show/1761556516
