Pickpick

#MayMovieMagic Day 8: #GimmeShelter says this foreigner in ”The Island.” In return, he experienced glaring xenophobia and outright rejection. While most of the stories we have featured for our immigrant theme share narratives of assimilation and a renegotiation of one‘s identity, this ‘foreigner‘ was never given that opportunity to even feel remotely a sense of belonging. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-40F - a truly harrowing picturebook.

“People always did like to talk, didn't they? That's why I call myself a witch now: the Wicked Witch of the West, if you want the full glory of it. As long as people are going to call you a lunatic anyway, why not get the benefit of it? It liberates you from convention.”

Another quote from earlier in the same conversation: “It is the cause of God I advocate: it is under His standard I enlist you. I cannot accept on His behalf a divided allegiance: it must be entire.”
“Oh! I will give my heart to God,” I said. “You do not want it.” 🔥

BarbaraJean Ugggh, this marriage proposal! I always say it‘s the most insulting proposal in literature (“you were made for labor, not for love” 🙄), and I love how Jane rejects him here! 3w

Augie March spends days convincing himself that this woman will take him back as his companion and it all comes crashing down around him with one word.

gradcat I love Saul Bellow! Glad to see you‘re reading or have read 3w
twohectobooks @gradcat much to my dismay, I‘ve read a couple of his books now and didn‘t like either one very much. On the other hand, they both had some very good parts, especially Augie March. 3w
gradcat Ah well, sorry you didn‘t like them. Did you read 3w

“I gave him my heart, and he took and pinched it to death; and flung it back to me. People feel with their hearts, Ellen, and since he has destroyed mine, I have not power to feel for him.” #rejection #quotsymay19 @TK-421
